What you would seeLo que verías

A single page of a sketchbook, seen whole against a nearly black background. The paper is light brown, warm and slightly grainy, with worn, irregular edges: frayed at the top, torn a little at the lower corners, and stained faintly near the upper left. On the left, the thickness of the bound volume shows as a stack of thin, bluish-green and cream leaves; on the right, a narrow pale strip marks the edge of the support. In the lower left corner, the number “52” is barely legible. At the center stands a bald or closely shaven monk, seen from the front and slightly from above, wrapped in a long, heavy robe that falls to where his feet should be but never quite defines them. Black chalk builds the shadows with loose, granular strokes, while white heightening traces the shoulders, the ample sleeve of his right arm, and the long folds of the drapery. His arms are crossed or gathered at his chest, one hand clutching the cloth, the thumb raised. The face is the most worked area: one eye sunk in dark shadow, the other barely suggested, a short nose, a closed mouth, prominent ears. The expression is lowered, serious, inward. Large areas of the page remain empty, so the figure seems to materialize out of the paper itself.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the face and its strong shadow over one eye, then follow the white highlights down the folds of the robe. Notice how the figure emerges only with effort: the feet and the lower drapery fade into the paper, as if the monk were only half present.

ContextContexto

This is page 52 of the so-called Verona Sketchbook, drawn in 1760 by Francesco Lorenzi (1723-1787), an Italian artist. The source identifies it as a standing monk, made in black chalk with white heightening, and preserved as part of a bound volume in the Drawings department of the Cleveland Museum of Art, John L. Severance Fund. The individual monk’s identity and the work this study may have prepared for are not known; it is probably an exercise in figure, gesture and drapery within a working sketchbook, rather than a finished piece intended for display.

Curious detailDato curioso

On toned paper, the sheet itself does the work of a middle tone: black chalk supplies the shadows, white supplies the light, and everything in between is simply the brownish paper left untouched.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. Is this monk posing, praying, or simply being studied as a fall of cloth around a body?¿Este monje posa, reza o solo está siendo estudiado como una caída de tela alrededor de un cuerpo?
  2. Why leave the feet and the lower robe unresolved while working the face with such care?¿Por qué dejar sin resolver los pies y la parte baja del manto mientras el rostro se trabaja con tanto cuidado?
  3. How does the drawing change if we imagine it torn from the sketchbook and framed alone on a white wall?¿Cómo cambia el dibujo si lo imaginamos arrancado del cuaderno y enmarcado solo, en una pared blanca?

The conservatorLa restauradora

As a conservator I am drawn to the warm light brown paper with its granular texture, with frayed edges at the top and slightly torn lower corners, and that faint stain near the upper left that speaks of its age. The black charcoal builds shadows with loose strokes and the white heightens the shoulders and folds of the heavy mantle that covers the monk down to his hidden feet. I am interested in how the empty areas let the paper breathe and how the thickness of the bound sketchbook remains visible on the left.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

As an amateur astronomer I see this page as a nocturnal apparition against an almost black background that recalls a starless sky. The bald monk emerges from the light brown paper like a constellation traced in black charcoal and white touches on the shoulders and sleeves. His arms gathered over his chest and his serious face, with one eye sunk in shadow, seem to concentrate gravity. I like that much of the sheet stays empty, so the figure emerges slowly, just as the eye adapts to darkness to make out a shape.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

I am an eight year old girl and this monk looks like a friendly ghost coming out of cookie colored paper. He is a little bald, with big ears and a super long mantle that covers his feet, as if he were floating. His arms are crossed and one hand holds the fabric with the thumb up. His face looks a bit sad and mysterious, with one very dark eye. I like that there is a lot of empty space around him and that the little book looks thick on the left, with many pages stacked up.

Look at the lower left corner of the page: what number can you just make out?

    HintPista

It is the page number of the Verona Sketchbook written very small on the light brown paper.

  2. #2

What warm color is the paper of the sketchbook where the standing monk appears?

    HintPista

Think of the tone of a cookie or light cardboard, it is not white or black.

  3. #3

What dark and light materials did the artist use to draw the mantle and the shadows of the monk?

    HintPista

One leaves granular dark strokes and the other lights up shoulders and folds on the paper.
