ink, tempera, and gold on vellum
What you would seeLo que verías
A single vellum leaf, creamy white and almost entirely empty around the upper-left block of writing. The page is vertical, with wide, calm margins and two faint stains toward the right edge. In the upper left, about eighteen lines of Gothic script crowd together in very dark brown ink, with compact words, frequent abbreviations, and larger initial letters opening several sentences. Only the final word breaks the darkness: it is written in bright red. To the right of the text, occupying roughly a third of the block's width and its full height, a rectangular border glows with color. A great scroll of blue and gold acanthus twists in S-curves across a background speckled with tiny black dots and small red and green flecks. At the top hang clusters of deep blue grapes among green vine leaves; below, the vegetation changes and bears brown, scaly fruits resembling pinecones, on stems with finer leaves. Some leaves are fully painted, others left outlined on the vellum. The contrast is striking: severe, repetitive writing on the left; exuberant, almost textile-like ornament on the right, with the sheen of tempera and touches of gold.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the text block and notice how orderly and dense it seems, then slide toward the border until the scrollwork breaks that regularity. Look closely at the shift from grapes at the top to pinecone-like fruits at the bottom. At the end, find the single word in red: a small change of color that also changes the rhythm of reading.
ContextContexto
This is folio 131 recto of a Book of Hours for the Use of Rouen, made around 1470 in Rouen, France, with ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. The source attributes it to the Master of the Geneva Latini, a conventional name taken from a manuscript now in Geneva; he was active in Rouen between about 1460 and 1480 and was, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art, the city's principal illuminator in the second half of the fifteenth century. The source notes that Rouen was then an important center of book production, supported by its wealthy cathedral chapter. Who commissioned or owned this particular volume is not stated.

The red word at the end is a rubric: in medieval manuscripts, passages written in red ink —from Latin ruber, red— guided the reader through the structure and use of the text.

I focus on the material: a creamy white vellum leaf with wide margins and two faint specks on the right. The text block at the upper left gathers about eighteen lines in dark brown gothic script, compact and abbreviated, with slightly larger initials. Only the last word is a rubric in bright red. Beside it, the plant border shines with tempera and gold: a blue and gold acanthus scroll on a ground dotted with black specks and red and green flecks, with blue grapes above and scaly brown fruits below.

For me this page is like a cropped night sky. On the left, the dark brown text is an orderly constellation of about eighteen tight lines, severe and repetitive. On the right another universe opens: the vertical border takes up about a third of the width and the full height, like a luminous band. Its ground sprinkled with black dots reminds me of stars, while the blue and gold scrolls, the grapes and the brown fruits are plant-like planets swirling in curves. It is the contrast between discipline and exuberance.

This sheet looks almost empty and I like that, because it lets you breathe. At the upper left there are many tiny brown letters packed together, like eighteen lines saying serious things, and at the end a little word in red that shines. Next to it there is a magic strip that takes up about a third of the space and goes from top to bottom. It has blue curls with gold, blue grapes with green leaves on top and below little brown pinecones with thin little leaves. Some leaves are fully painted and others just outlined.
