What you would seeLo que verías

A vellum page in soft ivory tone is seen straight on, carrying eleven lines of handwritten Latin text in dark brown and black ink, left-aligned. Each verse opens with a small two-line initial painted in blue, red, gold and white with delicate filigree. Narrow horizontal line-fillers with geometric patterns in blue, red and gold appear between some lines. Occupying the entire right margin is a lush vertical border on a ground speckled with tiny black dots. The border intertwines acanthus leaves in deep blue and old gold forming curling scrolls, five-petalled flowers in pink and red with gilded centers, slender green leaves, and at the bottom a cluster of small round red berries with green foliage. The lighting is even, revealing the smooth, slightly glossy surface of the vellum and the raised gleam of gold. No human figures are present; the focus is calligraphic and ornamental. Faint red ruling lines are visible at the top, and on the left the book’s gutter shows the thickness of the gathered pages.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the text block and its colored initials, then let your eye drift to the right border to follow how blue and gold lead the vertical ascent. Notice the dotted black ground and the red berries at the bottom: the contrast between strict script and free, curling nature turns a devotional page into a visual jewel.

ContextContexto

This folio comes from a Book of Hours for the Use of Rouen, dated about 1470 and attributed to the Master of the Geneva Latini, active in Rouen between 1460 and 1480. According to Cleveland Museum of Art information, Rouen was a major center of book production in the late 1400s, supported by the wealthy chapter of its cathedral where stationers and booksellers were likely concentrated. The medium is ink, tempera and gold on vellum. The page preserves liturgical Latin text, probably Psalms of praise, with illuminated initials and marginal decoration typical of late Gothic illumination. The original patron and early provenance are not recorded, but today the volume belongs to the Medieval Art collection as a gift of the Feiss family.

Curious detailDato curioso

Books of Hours were private prayer books for laypeople, and their gold on vellum was meant to catch candlelight during devotion, an effect still visible in the shine of the initials and scrolls on this page.

Come closer and you will see what excites me most: the contrast of materials. The support is vitela in light ivory, smooth and slightly glossy, made to last for centuries. On top, brown and black ink forms eleven lines in Latin, with pale red ruling still visible. The initials in blue, red, gold and white are not just decorative: they protect the text and guide reading. On the right, the vegetal border shows acanthus leaves in deep blue and old gold, pink flowers and red berries. The gold is raised and catches the light. Everything is a fragile balance between pigment, metal and skin.

I always look for dots and here there is a hidden sky. The background of the border, that speckling with tiny black dots on a light ground, reminds me of a starry night in negative. Floating over that constellation are acanthus leaves in intense blue and old gold curling like nebulae, five-petaled flowers and red berries that look like small planets. There are no human figures in this folio, only text and ornament, as if the universe had been ordered into eleven lines aligned to the left. It is a vegetal cosmos in the margin of prayer, expanding vertically.

This page looks like a garden that escaped along the edge! On the right there is a super long trail full of blue and golden leaves making little curls, tiny pink flowers with shiny centers and at the bottom a little bunch of red balls that are berries. Next to it there are eleven lines written in brown and black ink, all nice and straight, and each line starts with a little colored letter in blue, red and gold that shines. I like that there are no people, just letters and little plants. It is as if someone let nature decorate their Latin homework.
