I look at this pale cream vellum and notice its material qualities: slight wrinkles, uneven tone and that brownish oxidation stain on the left margin. The black ink is deep and the red ruling line is still visible. I am drawn to the burnished gold of the vertical border, which creates a subtle relief and catches the light. The blue and gold acanthus, the red strawberries with green leaves and the dotted background in black and gold show tempera on parchment. It is very fine late gothic work for private devotion.
