This folio comes from a Book of Hours for the Use of Rouen, dated about 1470 and attributed to the Master of the Geneva Latini, active in Rouen from 1460 to 1480. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Rouen in the late 1400s was an established center of book production, supported by the wealthy chapter of its cathedral and by stationers and booksellers likely clustered near the cathedral precinct. Named after a manuscript now in Geneva, this artist was Rouen’s principal illuminator during the second half of the 15th century. The medium is ink, tempera and gold on vellum. I love the edge of the page because it looks like a magic vine! There are leaves that curl like little tails, tiny blue flowers and little red balls that look like candies. And there are golden dots that shine like frost. On one side there are lots of tiny black letters very close together and each line starts with a big colorful letter. The page looks old and soft. I want to trace the little plants with my finger and count how many blue flowers I can find hidden among the gold.
