What you would seeLo que verías

A print in black ink on intense yellow paper, enclosed by a thin rectangular border. In the foreground, on a pale, almost empty expanse of sand, several women rest: on the left, one figure reclines with her back partly turned; at center, a woman sits in profile, barefoot, wearing a light headdress and loose clothing; on the right, a bare-breasted woman kneels on a white cloth, one hand near her mouth and the other resting on the ground. Behind them, three women stand and walk while carrying work. One balances a large round bundle on her head, another holds a shallow dish and a woven basket overhead, and the third, in profile on the right, supports an enormous basket with both arms raised. Their patterned dresses, bare feet, and suspended steps create a procession behind the resting group. A dark horizontal band suggests the sea, while pale hills rise in the distance. Thin trunks with rounded fruit and a small leafy tree organize the background. The line is sketchy and uneven, with cross-hatching on the sea, dresses and bodies. At lower left, handwritten text reads “Paul Gauguin” and “Les Cigales et les fourmis.”

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the women working upright, then look down at the figures resting in the foreground. Notice how the contrast between carrying and reclining echoes the title. Finally, look at the hands and baskets and follow the quiet chain of gestures linking one figure to the next.

ContextContexto

The source identifies this work as Paul Gauguin (French, 1848–1903), dated 1889, a zincograph from the Volpini Suite, held by the Cleveland Museum of Art. Zincography is a printmaking technique related to lithography but using a zinc plate. The suite takes its name from its presentation at the Café Volpini in Paris in 1889. Gauguin drew on scenes observed in Brittany and during his earlier stay in Martinique; the clothing, baskets and tropical vegetation here probably refer to Martinique, although the source does not state a specific place. The French title refers to the well-known fable of the cicada and the ant, traditionally associated with idleness and labor.

Curious detailDato curioso

The bright yellow ground is not a later discoloration: Gauguin intentionally printed several works in the Volpini Suite on yellow paper, making the sheet itself part of the image's light and heat.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I focus on how this 1889 zincograph was made, part of the Suite Volpini shown at the Café Volpini in Paris. Gauguin worked with black ink on a zinc plate and printed it on this intense yellow paper that is now a main character. Notice the thin rectangular border, the loose and uneven line, and the cross-hatching that gives body to the sea, the patterned dresses, and the skin. At the lower left you can read the handwritten Paul Gauguin and Les Cigales et les fourmis, the signature and the title in French that accompany the scene.

When I look at this print I think about light and the rhythm of the day. The yellow of the paper is like a fixed sun warming the whole scene, while the dark band of the sea and the pale hills in the background mark the horizon. I imagine the three standing women as planets in procession, each balancing her woven basket or round bundle on her head, and the three in the foreground resting, like constellations on pause over the pale sand. The title that alludes to the fable of the cicada and the ant reminds me of the cycle between work and rest under the same sky.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

I like this drawing because it looks like a very hot day. The paper is yellow as if everything is under the sun. In front there are three ladies resting on the sand: one lying down, another sitting with a scarf on her head, and another kneeling with a hand near her mouth. Behind them there are three more walking and carrying things: one balances a bundle on her head, another holds a low plate and a basket, and another lifts a huge basket. They are all barefoot and their dresses have little patterns. I think the ones in back are working and the ones in front are resting.
