What you would seeLo que verías

The piece is a long, horizontal textile fragment, irregular and heavily worn, mounted on a plain light-beige cloth background. It is made of two fragments joined together, with frayed edges, tears, folds, and missing areas, especially along the lower right and in a pinkish patch at the upper right. Its surface is dominated by two large floral roundels placed side by side on a deep, faded red ground. Inside each circle, two riders on horseback face one another in strict symmetry, holding long lances. The horses, in pale gold and tan tones, have stiff bodies, decorative harnesses, and legs stretched in a static gallop. Beneath their hooves, elongated lions in similar tones seem to run or fall. Details in dark teal, cream, and ocher define crowns or tall headdresses, garments, plant motifs, borders, and small repeated ornaments. The weave looks fine but brittle, with shiny worn areas, dark stains, and zones where the pattern nearly disappears. The figures have no realistic volume: they are flat, linear, and almost heraldic. A human looking closely would notice the contrast between the intended luxury of silk and the fabric's present fragility, like a ceremonial scene surviving in pieces.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the two large circles and notice how each one works as a small stage. Then move closer to the horses' legs: beneath them, the hunted lions change the scene from pageantry to confrontation. Finally, look at the torn edges and missing areas, which are also part of the object's story.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, these are two fragments mounted together, made in the 800s in eastern Iran or Central Asia, in silk samite weave. Their roundels with horsemen hunting lions, the floral frames, and the hunters' clothing were inspired by Byzantine silks. The stiff, abstracted style, however, is described by the museum as characteristic of Sogdian silks from Sogdiana, in Central Asia, often traded to distant markets. The fragments were preserved in a grave in Egypt, where they were found sewn as ornaments onto a tunic. The exact author and place of manufacture are not known.

Curious detailDato curioso

Although probably woven in Central Asia, these fragments survived in a grave in Egypt, sewn onto a tunic: their burial journey shows how far a luxury silk could travel in the ninth century.

If you look closely you see two fragments joined on a beige backing, with frayed edges, tears and a missing area at the lower right. What moves me most is the contrast between the intense red background and the worn sheen of the samit silk. The golden and ochre threads of the horses are brittle and in places the pattern almost vanishes. My job is to slow that loss without erasing traces of time, like the stains and folds that tell its journey from Central Asia to a tomb in Egypt.

These two circular medallions remind me of binary systems, two identical circles side by side on a red background that looks like an ancient sky. Inside, the facing riders and their long lances create such strict symmetry that it feels like a constellation drawn with a ruler. Below, the elongated lions run like comets caught in orbit. Although the cloth is fragmented and frayed, you can still read the flat heraldic order, like a star map woven in silk for long-distance travelers.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a broken magic carpet someone glued onto a lighter cloth. I see two big red circles and inside four horses with people wearing tall hats pointing long sticks at each other. Below there are little lions that look like running sausages. Everything is frayed and full of little holes, as if a mouse nibbled it. I like that the horses do not really move, they are frozen like in a game and still shine a little in the light.
