What you would seeLo que verías

A wide six-panel folding screen stretches horizontally, its paper a warm aged ivory with a gilded brocade border patterned with faint florals. The painting is executed in black ink and soft gray washes that create a misty, atmospheric effect. In the foreground, at left and center, dark craggy rocks and gnarled pine trees with needle clusters anchor the view; tiny human figures can be seen walking along a path near the shore. Slightly behind, perched on a rocky outcrop, stands a multi-tiered pavilion with curved roofs beside a simpler thatched hut and fence. The middle ground is dominated by empty water and fog, rendered as large areas of untouched paper that convey vast distance. In the background, pale mountains dissolve into haze, with a minute pagoda on a ridge and a sheer cliff emerging from clouds. To the right, a solitary small boat floats on the water and a distant arched bridge spans an inlet with sparse shrubs. Light is diffuse with no hard shadows, and the paper shows gentle creases, faint foxing and vertical seams where panels join. Calligraphy and a small red seal appear at the lower left corner, with ink textures ranging from bold wet strokes to dry feathery washes.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Read the screen from left to right as a journey: follow the dark pines and rocks in the foreground into the empty mist at the center. Then linger on the tiny distant marks — the pagoda, the lone boat, the bridge — that shift the scale and reveal how much space is suggested with so little ink.

ContextContexto

Work by Japanese painter Watanabe Shikō (1683–1755), active in Kyoto during the Edo period (1615–1868), dated to the early to mid 1700s. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, it is one of a pair of six-panel byōbu folding screens in ink on paper. It reflects training in the Kanō school manner, which favored a monochrome ink palette, vigorous brushwork and traditional Chinese subject matter. The theme of the Eight Views of Xiao-Xiang, a classic Chinese landscape grouping, is rendered here in an especially expansive way to suggest the vastness of China’s terrain. The artist also painted the pair of Iris screens in the same collection. No further details about the original commission are recorded.

Curious detailDato curioso

Byōbu folding screens like this were movable architecture, used to partition rooms, and their gold-edged paper surfaces were designed to catch and softly reflect candlelight.

I always pause on what was left unpainted. This six-panel screen in aged ivory tones leaves large empty areas to suggest water and mist, and that is as fragile as it is beautiful. I notice the black ink and gray washes, the vertical folds where the panels join, the wrinkled texture and those small humidity stains that tell us about the passage of time. The golden perimeter frame protects a very sensitive paper. My job is to preserve that balance between the painted and the empty without erasing its history.

This landscape makes me think of watching the night sky between clouds. The blurred mountains in the background and that rocky peak emerging through mist are like constellations appearing and disappearing. The tiny pagoda and the distant arch over the inlet remind me how small we are compared to immensity. Watanabe Shikō uses emptiness as if it were outer space, letting ink suggest a misty atmosphere. That solitary boat on the right sails like an isolated planet in a universe of paper.

It is a giant screen that folds like an accordion! It has six parts and looks super long. I like to hunt for hidden little things: I found twisted pine trees, pointy rocks, a pavilion with a curved roof and a little house with a fence. There are also tiny people walking near the water. In the back there are mountains you can barely see because of the mist and on the right a lonely little boat floating. In the corner there are funny letters and a small red seal. Everything looks foggy, like a dream.
