Gum tempera and gold on paper
What you would seeLo que verías
The vertical painting is surrounded by a wide, worn red border with faded gold flecks and areas where the surface has rubbed away. Inside, a lone man sits in strict right-facing profile on a raised white dais in the lower centre. He wears a small orange-red cap or turban, a pale yellow, finely striped belted tunic with an orange sash, and sits cross-legged and barefoot on a pink carpet patterned with small flowers. A low red railing runs around the platform. In his raised left hand he holds a small white page marked with horizontal lines of red and black ink; his right hand rests near his knee. A pale mark is visible on his forehead and a small earring catches the light. Behind him stretches a flat yellow-green field. On the left, a large tree with a dark, dense, rounded canopy and a grey, gnarled trunk holds three light-coloured birds; on the right, a smaller dark tree is cropped by the edge. Long, thin, willow-like branches sweep diagonally across the upper part, stirred as if by wind, beneath a blue-grey, clouded sky with a few small birds in flight. The paint surface is matte and delicate, with fine lines defining leaves, fabric folds and facial features.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Begin with the solitary figure and the sheet in his hand, then let your eye rise to the swaying branches and the darkening sky above him. Notice how the large tree on the left and the smaller one on the right frame him without closing off the open field. The tiny birds, often missed at first, turn a formal portrait into a living landscape.
ContextContexto
According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this work from about 1707 depicts Dilip Singh, who reigned from 1695 to 1741 in Guler, in the Pahari kingdoms of northern India. He holds a manuscript page with alternating lines of red and black ink, probably a sacred text; the mark on his forehead signals devotion to the Hindu god Vishnu. Dilip Singh inaugurated the practice of commissioning paintings and manuscripts for the Guler royal collection. Some artists from a Guler family had worked in the Mughal imperial workshop in Lahore, bringing a naturalism and delicate refinement visible in the trees, facial features, belted tunic and floral carpet.

A surprising visual detail: although this is a royal portrait, there are no attendants, weapons or court — only birds, trees and a text in the ruler's hand.

The conservatorLa restauradora
As a restorer I notice the wide worn red border with golden spots where pigment has been lost and the matte surface of gum tempera and gold on paper. I am drawn to the very fine lines that define the folds of the light tunic with yellow stripes, the pink carpet with small flowers and the tree leaves. The white sheet with red and black lines held by the man shows how delicate the material is and how time has left visible traces without erasing its devout purpose.
The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado
As an amateur astronomer I look at the cloudy bluish gray sky that fills the upper part and the long thin branches crossing diagonally as if moved by wind. I am intrigued by how the painter used that sky to place small birds in flight above the yellowish green field. The man seated in profile, with his orange red cap and the pale mark on his forehead, seems to be reading under that open sky, between two dark trees, as if searching the sacred text for guidance as constant as the stars.

I see a man sitting cross-legged on a little pink rug with tiny flowers, he is barefoot and wears a pretty little red hat. In his hand he holds a white little sheet with red and black lines, it looks like he is reading. I like the low red railing around him and the big tree with the crooked trunk where three little white birds are hiding. Up above the sky is kind of gray and there are more little birds flying among twigs moving in the breeze.
