What you would seeLo que verías
A vertical black-and-white engraving on cream paper, built with dense cross-hatching that creates volume, shadow, and texture without color. In the center stands a leafy, gnarled tree dividing the scene. To its right, seen from behind, a powerfully muscled nude Hercules holds a branch horizontally with his left arm raised; his legs are spread in a stance of confrontation, and he wears a leafy crown. Facing him, partly hidden by the trunk, a clothed woman raises a heavy club above her shoulder, about to strike, her dress falling in long vertical folds. At lower left, reclining on the ground, a nude woman with a pearl headdress holds a cloth over her head and opens her mouth in alarm; beside her, in profile, a bearded satyr-like man sits on a lion skin whose paw and mane are visible. At the far right edge, a small naked child gestures as if startled. Behind them open two landscapes: a castle and winding road at upper left, and a river, hills, and mountains at right. The foreground shows grass, stones, and crumpled drapery. At bottom center is the AD monogram.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the three bodies forming a triangle around the tree and notice that no one is looking at the same point. Then look for the raised clubs in the center: the scene is suspended just before the blow. At the edges, the castle, the river, and the small child open the allegory onto an ordinary landscape.
ContextContexto
Hercules at the Crossroads, by Albrecht Dürer (1471–1528), dated circa 1498 and held by the Cleveland Museum of Art, shows the classical allegory of Hercules choosing between Virtue and Vice, usually embodied by two female figures. According to the museum, Dürer traveled from Nuremberg to Italy in 1494–95 and probably stopped in Mantua to meet Andrea Mantegna, then about 64; whether that exchange took place is unknown. Mantegna introduced him to complex mythological subjects and the nude body, and Dürer reused one of Mantegna's nymphs from Battle of the Sea Gods in this engraving.

Curious detailDato curioso
Dürer's famous AD monogram is not in a corner, but at the bottom center, almost under Hercules' foot and among the folds of cloth on the ground.

What fascinates me here is the line work. Everything is made only with black ink on cream paper, with no color, yet the dense cross-hatching creates shadows, muscles, and even the rough bark of the central tree. Look closely at how the lines follow the shape of Hercules body to give volume, or how the vertical folds of the skirt of the woman with the club suggest movement. Down in the center you will see the AD monogram, Dürer's signature that we take great care to preserve when conserving the print.

I like to read this image as a divided sky. The twisted tree in the center works like a line that separates two worlds and two paths, just like the crossroads in the title. On one side, at the top left, a castle with a winding road appears; on the other side, to the right, a river opens up with hills and distant mountains. Hercules in the middle, muscular and with a wreath of leaves, seems suspended between those two options. It is the classic allegory of choosing between Virtue and Vice, between two landscapes and two destinies.

This picture is full of scary moments! The tree in the middle is all twisted and splits the scene in two. On one side there is a super strong man with no clothes, with huge muscles, holding a branch as if he is about to fight. In front of him, a lady in a long dress lifts a huge club over her shoulder. Down below there is a woman lying on the ground with a little cloth on her head and her mouth open as if screaming, and next to her a bearded man sitting on a lion skin with claws. Even a small child at the edge looks frightened.

I am very high up and far to the left, behind the tree. I am a building with towers reached by a winding road. What am I?
