The Small Passion: Christ Bearing the Cross, by Albrecht DürerLa Pequeña Pasión: Cristo cargando la cruz, de Albrecht Dürer
Albrecht Dürer (German, 1471–1528) · 1509 · Germany
woodcut
What you would seeLo que verías
A black-and-white woodcut with dense, energetic linework that crowds the rectangular frame with a moving throng. In the foreground at lower right, Christ has fallen to his knees on a rock; he wears a crown of thorns, a curly beard, and a pale, draped robe that trails on the ground; he grips a long, heavy wooden cross across his shoulder with both hands. His face turns outward to the viewer, showing exhaustion. Around him, several men push and pull him: one raises a staff, another tugs his clothing, another wears a pointed cap. To the left, two women in broad cloaks and headdresses — likely the holy women — embrace and watch with contained anguish. Behind them, soldiers with spears and halberds and bearded figures in turbans and pointed hats escort the procession. In the background at left, a walled gate with a grille appears; at right, houses and towers on a hill suggest Jerusalem. Light is graphic, created by the contrast of pale paper and black ink and by hatching and cross-hatching. Textures of wood, wrinkled fabric, hair, and stone are rendered with extremely fine lines. In the lower right corner, a small tablet bears Dürer’s monogram and the date 1509.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with Christ’s fallen face at lower right, the still point of the composition. Follow the diagonal of the cross and the poles that cut across the crowd to feel the tension. Then compare the violent gestures of the soldiers with the grieving embrace of the women at left.
ContextContexto
This print belongs to the series known as the Small Passion, a set of 36 woodcuts by German Renaissance artist Albrecht Dürer (1471–1528). Published as a book in 1511, the series depicts scenes from the life and Passion of Christ for private devotion. This sheet, dated 1509 on the block itself, shows Christ on the way to Calvary, a central theme in Christian imagery. The technique is woodcut, a relief print from a carved wooden block, in which Dürer excelled and achieved wide circulation. The impression preserved at the Cleveland Museum of Art entered as a gift in memory of William J. Collins. No further details are given in the source record.

Curious detailDato curioso
Dürer signed this woodcut with his famous AD monogram and the date 1509 on a little tablet drawn to look like a carved stone on the ground, a device he used to claim authorship on reproducible prints.

What holds my attention is the linework. This black and white is not simple: it is black ink on light paper, with shading built from very fine parallel and crosshatched lines. I look at how Dürer renders different textures just by cutting wood: the grain of the long cross, the wrinkled fabric of the light cloak dragging on the ground, the curly hair, the stone where Christ falls to his knees. The rectangle feels full, tense. And at the lower right, that little tablet with the monogram and 1509 reminds me this is a woodcut made to be printed many times.

I always look at backgrounds, and here Dürer uses them to place us in the world. On the left a walled gate with a grille is hinted at, like an exit from the city; on the right, houses and towers on a hill suggest Jerusalem. In between there is a crowd in motion: Christ carrying the cross at the center, soldiers with spears and halberds, men with turbans and pointed hats, and on the left two women in wide cloaks embracing in anguish. It is not a starry sky, but that graphic light, the contrast between ink and paper, organizes the scene like a narrative constellation.

There are so many people together and everyone is moving! I see a man with a crown of thorns and curly beard who has fallen to his knees on a stone and hugs a very big and heavy wooden cross. His face looks tired and he looks at us. Some men pull his clothes and one raises a stick, they are not kind. On the left there are two ladies in long cloaks hugging each other looking very sad. Behind them there are soldiers with long sticks with points. I like to find tiny details like the pointy hats and the little lines that make the shadows.

In the lower right corner of the print, what personal mark does the artist leave next to the date 1509?
HintPista
Look for a small tablet in the bottom right corner, it is not a full name signature.

What material is the long and heavy cross that Christ holds over his shoulder as he falls to his knees?
HintPista
Notice the streaked texture of the object crossing his shoulder that he holds with both hands.

On the left side of the scene, how many women in wide cloaks and headdresses embrace in anguish as they watch Christ fall?
HintPista
Look to the left side, a bit apart from the crowd of soldiers; they wear long cloaks and headdresses.
