What you would seeLo que verías
A single, nearly circular object fills the center of the image, seen from above against a smooth, light gray background with no other elements. It is a flat disc of a creamy, pale beige tone, pierced at the center by a perfectly round hole through which the background shows. Around that hole, three wide concentric rings in relief create the effect of circles within circles, with dark brown lines settled into the incised grooves. Around the edge, ten smaller motifs are arranged in a ring: each is a raised circle with an incised ring and a tiny dark dot or hole at the center, like small eyes or suns. The surface looks smooth and somewhat glossy where it has been worn, with matte, rough areas at the edges. Thin scratches, brownish stains, pores, and small chips are visible, especially on the right side and lower rim, where the outline ceases to be regular. Soft, even light comes from above and casts almost no shadow, revealing slight reliefs and texture without harsh contrasts. There is no scale reference, but its shape suggests a small, lightweight piece made to fit on a shaft and spin. A few outer circles are partly cut off or worn, giving it an handmade, aged feel.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Begin at the central hole and follow the concentric rings outward, as if the object were beginning to spin. Then count the small circles around the edge and notice that they are not identical. The chips and the dirt settled in the grooves shift the reading: this is not just a geometric design, but a tool worn by use and time.
ContextContexto
According to the source data, this is a spindle whorl made of incised bone, from Iran in the early Islamic period, dated between the 700s and 900s, by an unknown maker. It belongs to the Textiles department of the Cleveland Museum of Art, which received it as a Gift of Edward Gans. A spindle whorl was fitted onto the shaft of a spindle to add weight and momentum while spinning fibers such as wool or cotton into thread. The punctured-circle motif was very common in the ancient and early medieval world. The exact place of manufacture, its owner, and who used it are not known.

Curious detailDato curioso
A spindle whorl works like a small flywheel: its weight keeps the spindle turning longer and more steadily, making it possible to produce finer, more even thread with less effort.
Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse
- What kinds of movements and sounds might have accompanied this object while it was being used to spin?¿Qué movimientos y sonidos habrán acompañado a esta pieza mientras se usaba para hilar?
- Why decorate so carefully a small, everyday tool that would spin so fast its design would blur?¿Por qué decorar con tanto cuidado una herramienta pequeña y cotidiana que, al girar rápido, haría borroso su diseño?
- What can the wear, chips, and dirt in its grooves tell us about the hands that held it?¿Qué pueden decirnos el desgaste, las muescas y la tierra en sus ranuras sobre las manos que la sostuvieron?

What moves me most is the trace of use. It is carved and incised bone, in a pale creamy beige with dark brown lines settled in the grooves, and it is highly polished by the hands that spun it. I see wear on the irregular lower edge, fine scratches, pores and brownish stains. The three concentric rings and the ten little dotted circles around the rim are worn in places, some incomplete, a sign of centuries of spinning work. The even light reveals that soft sheen among matte and rough areas.

I cannot help seeing a miniature system. A pale disc with a perfect void at its center, like an eclipsed sun, and around it three raised orbits, circles within circles. On the periphery, ten small suns or planets with a dark core form a regular crown. It is a piece made to fit on a shaft and spin to keep momentum, and that rotation reminds me of celestial bodies. Although it is an everyday bone tool for spinning from between 700 and 900, its serene geometry looks like a hand-carved map of the cosmos.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It looks like a cookie or a flattened donut in creamy color with a little hole in the middle to put a stick through and spin it like a top. It has three big rings like little footprints and ten eyes around it looking at me, each with its black dot. One side is a bit chipped and scratchy, as if it was used a lot. I imagine that when it spun fast it looked blurry and hummed. It is tiny and soft but with brown lines where dust from long ago gathered.
