What you would seeLo que verías
The piece fills almost the entire frame, viewed from directly above and centred against a plain grey background that is slightly lighter towards the middle. It is a circular object, like a small, thick doughnut, photographed in close-up with no other elements to indicate its real scale. At the centre is a perfectly round hole revealing the background. Around it lies a smooth, slightly sunken inner ring of polished bone in ivory, beige and pale ochre tones. Towards the outer edge, the surface rises and curves into a broad crown. Across this crown a pattern is incised all the way around: groups of two or three deep, parallel diagonal lines alternate with small circles containing a dark central dot, resembling eyes or tiny spirals. Many incisions retain an intense red, almost burgundy pigment that contrasts with the aged bone; others look dark with accumulated earth or wear. The texture is uneven: shiny, smooth areas from use sit beside rough, porous patches with grey stains, small cracks, scratches and embedded dirt. Soft light from above casts short shadows in the grooves and emphasises the relief. The edge is irregular, with wear and small losses that reveal its age and handling.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start at the empty centre and move outwards, following the ring of repeated cuts as if reading around a clock. Then look closely at the red pigment: notice where it remains vivid inside the grooves and where wear has erased it. That contrast between polished bone and rough, dirt-filled incisions is what reveals the object's age and handling.
ContextContexto
According to the source, this is a spindle whorl made in Iran during the early Islamic period, dated to the 700s–900s, by an unknown maker. It is carved from incised bone and is now in the Cleveland Museum of Art, in the Textiles department, as a gift of Edward Gans. A spindle whorl was fitted onto a spindle shaft to add weight and momentum while fibres were twisted into yarn. Its exact place of manufacture, owner and original fibres are not known; it probably belonged to an everyday textile-making context.

Curious detailDato curioso
It is striking that the intense red pigment still survives inside some of the deepest grooves after more than a thousand years, protected there from friction while the raised surface was worn smooth.

What fascinates me is how the bone tells its story without words. I see the polished surface at the center from constant rubbing against the spindle, and the outer crown still holding intense red pigment trapped in the grooves. Each diagonal incision and each small dotted circle was handmade between 700 and 900 in Iran. I notice wear, cracks and accumulated soil that speak of daily use and centuries underground before reaching the museum.

Seen from above it reminds me of a small solar system. The central hole is like a dark sun with a smooth ivory inner ring orbiting around it. The outer crown is a galaxy with repeating patterns: diagonal lines and dotted circles that look like eyes or stars. It makes me think how something so small and everyday, a counterweight for spinning thread, can be organized with such geometry and rhythm, as if the maker wanted to hold the cosmos in the palm of a hand.

It looks like a giant bone donut or a tiny lifesaver for ants. It has a little hole in the middle and is decorated with slanted lines and little eyes all around it. Some lines still have very bright red paint, as if someone colored it with a marker and it never faded. It looks old and scratched with gray spots, but it also shines where people touched it a lot. I imagine it spinning really fast like a top to make thread.
