What you would seeLo que verías

At the center stands a tall male figure carved in grayish sandstone, occupying almost the full height of the stele; he is nude, arms at his sides, palms slightly forward, bare feet resting on a lotus pedestal. His body is smooth and austere, broad-shouldered and narrow-waisted, with a small auspicious mark on the chest; his face is calm, eyes half-closed, soft lips and elongated earlobes, crowned by a bumpy coiffure. Behind his head spreads a fan-shaped hood of a seven-headed cobra, forming a halo with scalloped, shadowed edges. Above him three stacked parasols rise in diminishing tiers, a sign of high spiritual status. The background is densely packed: on both sides of the Jina, vertical rows of tiny figures — some seated in meditation, others standing with hands in reverence — and at the top two elephants guided by diminutive handlers, plus airborne celestial beings scattering garlands. The stone surface is porous and weathered, ranging from medium gray to warm brown, darker in the deep undercuts and on the polished torso. Soft frontal light emphasizes the contrast between the stillness of the central body and the busy, chattering frame of worshippers and divinities that encloses him.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start along the central axis, from the lotus at the feet to the serene face and the serpent hood behind it. Then let your gaze wander to the crowded borders, where miniature worshippers and elephants form a noisy chorus around the silent nude body. Notice how the three overhead parasols signal spiritual rank.

ContextContexto

Source data identifies this work as Parshva, the 23rd of the 24 Jinas who attained liberation, the only one shown with a serpent, from Central India, dated to the 800s, carved in sandstone and housed in the Indian and Southeast Asian Art department. It was made for followers of Digambara Jainism, which enjoins total nudity for those seeking liberation; hence the nude figure adorned only with the auspicious chest symbol and wheels of righteousness on the palms. He stands in meditation on a lotus base, his hierarchically tall form reaching toward the heavens, venerated by serpent deities and gods, with three umbrellas overhead marking him as a liberated being worthy of worship.

Curious detailDato curioso

In Jain iconography Parshva is always recognized by the canopy of naga hoods above his head, recalling the story in which a serpent king sheltered him during meditation.

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

I focus on the greyish sandstone, porous and weathered, with tones between medium grey and warm brown. The polished torso of the Jina contrasts with the darker areas of the deep relief. I see the smooth and austere body, broad-shouldered, with the auspicious symbol on the chest and feet resting on the lotus-shaped pedestal. I am moved by how the frontal light reveals the wear of time on the seven-headed hood and on the three tiered parasols.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

What amazes me most is the hierarchical scale: the Jina fills almost the entire height of the stele, as if his standing meditation reaches the heavens described in the record. Behind his head, the scalloped halo of the seven-headed cobra looks like a protective constellation. Above, the three tiered parasols mark his dignity, while the celestial beings throwing garlands and the worshippers in vertical rows revolve around him like an ordered cosmos.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This man has no clothes on and looks so calm! He is standing with his eyes almost closed, like he is playing freeze. Behind his head he has a giant snake hood with seven little heads that looks like a fan to protect him from the sun. On top there are three little umbrellas stacked one over the other. At his sides there are lots of tiny people praying and at the top there are even elephants with people riding them. Everything is carved in stone.
