What you would seeLo que verías

A single vertical page of aged paper fills almost the entire image, with no figures, landscape, or illustration. The surface is a warm cream, yellowed unevenly, with pale brown stains, small dark specks, and slightly worn edges, especially along the bottom and lower right corner. A thin rectangular frame encloses the text: close parallel lines in faded red, dark blue, and a muted golden tone run around all four sides, leaving a narrow margin between the writing and the paper's edge. Inside, about fourteen lines of flowing black script move from right to left. The handwriting mixes rounded curves, long horizontal strokes, dense clusters of letters, and small dots and marks above and below the lines. Line spacing is mostly regular, but a few words sit slightly apart, and one short line drops below the rhythm on the right side. In the lower third, the text changes into verse arranged in two separated columns, creating a patch of ordered white space. Below those columns, two longer lines resume the full width. Outside the frame, centered at the very bottom, is one small, fainter line of writing, as if a later note or catchword. Without a scale reference, the folio's exact size is not clear.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the frame and the margins, then read the page as an image: follow the lines from right to left and notice how their rhythm stays steady until they open into two columns near the bottom. That change in layout signals verse amid the prose. Finally, look for the small note below the border, outside the main text block.

ContextContexto

This is a text page from the *Tuti-nama* (*Tales of a Parrot*), dated to about 1560 and produced in Mughal India at the court of Akbar, who reigned from 1556 to 1605, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art. The *Tuti-nama* is a Persian collection of tales narrated by a parrot, ultimately derived from an older Sanskrit tradition. Akbar's court sponsored important manuscript workshops, where calligraphers, painters, and gilders worked together. This folio, however, contains no illustration. Its individual calligrapher is unknown, and the source provides no transcription or translation, so the exact passage shown here cannot be identified with certainty.

Curious detailDato curioso

Although the medium listed includes gold, this page is dominated almost entirely by black ink on paper: its richness comes from the calligraphy and the layout, not from an image or lavish color.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I focus on the material of this page from around 1560, made in Mughal India at Akbar’s court. With no illustration, everything speaks: the warm creamy yellowish paper with pale brown stains and dark specks, the worn edges at the bottom and lower right corner. The thin border in faded red, dark blue and muted gold frames about fourteen lines of fluid black calligraphy reading right to left. Near the bottom the text shifts into two neat columns leaving white space, then two full-width lines and a faint note outside the border below.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I love the order of this leaf from the Tuti-nama, Tales of a Parrot, like a constellation made of text. About fourteen black lines move right to left, held by a straight border of parallel lines in red, blue and gold. I am drawn to the shift in the lower third: the verses in two columns open a bright empty space, like sky between stars, then two long lines close the composition again. The tiny centered note outside the border below feels like a wayfinder to keep the reader on course.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This page has no pictures and still tells me a lot. It is creamy with light brown spots and tiny dots, and its edge looks a bit worn, especially at the bottom. All the black writing is inside a border of thin red, blue and golden lines. At the top the letters are close together with curves and little dots, and near the bottom they split into two columns with white space in between, like letting the words breathe. Way down outside the border there is a tiny faint line someone added later.
