What you would seeLo que verías
An open book seen from directly above on a dark ground, showing two parchment leaves densely covered with Gothic script in black ink. Each page holds two tight columns of small, uniform lettering with generous outer margins and a clear gutter at the center. Illuminated initials punctuate the text blocks: capitals in vivid blue and vermilion red, some extended with delicate pen flourishes in matching red and blue that curl into slender vines between columns and toward the lower margin. Rubrication appears in red for headings and emphasis, contrasting with the dark brown-black main script and its abbreviations. The parchment itself is matte and slightly undulating, with soft creases, subtle staining and faint speckling along the fore-edges, while the thick leather binding is visible at the spine and edges with a worn, browned tone. Even, diffused light reveals the slight relief of ink, the tactile thinness of vellum and tiny losses at the corners. The folio number 131 is inscribed at the top right. In the foreground the central fold casts a soft shadow, giving a strong sense of scale and three-dimensional volume to a volume roughly thirty centimeters tall.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First take in the strict grid of the double columns, then hunt for the blue and red initials. Follow the thin flourished vines trailing from each initial and notice how they pace your reading, and how the worn vellum at the edges hints at centuries of liturgical handling.
ContextContexto
This is folio 131r of the so-called Gotha Missal, a deluxe liturgical manuscript made around 1375 in Paris using ink, tempera and gold on vellum with a blind-tooled leather binding. Its decoration is typical of Parisian luxury books made for aristocratic or royal patrons and is attributed to the Master of the Boqueteaux and workshop, active at the court of King Charles V, who died in 1380. No royal portrait or colophon survives, so a direct royal commission cannot be proven, but its magnificent workmanship suggests it was probably made for a Valois prince, possibly the king himself. Its modern name comes from the German dukes of Gotha, later owners. It is now in the Cleveland Museum of Art.
Hoy pertenece al Cleveland Museum of Art.

Curious detailDato curioso
The folio still shows its early numbering at the top right and the medieval system of rubrication, where red ink marks liturgical divisions to help the celebrant navigate the dense Gothic text.

I focus on the material. I see two pages of matte parchment, with soft wrinkles, ochre stains from use and small holes along the edges. The black ink forms two columns per page, very regular, and its relief is visible. Initials in intense blue and vermilion interrupt the text with red and blue filigree that winds between columns. The central fold and the tooled leather spine remind us this is a thirty-centimeter object that has survived for centuries.

From above, the open book looks like an inverted night sky. The dark background frames two bright rectangles like luminous windows. Each column is a constellation of aligned lines, and the blue and red initials work as guiding stars that orient the reading. The filigree tendrils are fine orbits connecting the texts. The number 131 in the corner gives us coordinates, as if we were searching for an exact position on a celestial map.

It looks like a giant book full of tiny cramped letters, as if someone wrote a lot without getting tired. There are two pages with two columns on each one. What I like most are the big blue and red letters, with long tails that look like snakes or vines. The book looks very old, with little stains and wrinkles. In one corner there is a number, 131, and in the middle you can see the shadow where it folds.
