What you would seeLo que verías
An open book is seen from above against a dark, almost black ground, filling most of the frame. Two cream-coloured vellum pages show dense Latin text in dark brown Gothic script, arranged in two narrow columns per page. On the left, the thickness of the gathered leaves and a worn, mottled brown leather binding with frayed edges are visible. The writing is punctuated by initials in red and deep blue, some small within the lines, others large and historiated with dark grounds, fine white tracery, touches of gold, and tiny faces or floral motifs. Delicate vine stems in blue, muted red, grey, and gold curl around the margins, ending in pointed leaves and small star-like flowers. On the upper right of the right-hand page, marked '15' in the corner, a rectangular miniature with a gold frame depicts a sacred birth scene: in the foreground a haloed woman in pale blue-grey drapery reclines beside a haloed older figure, while an angel in salmon pink leans over them; above, small sheep-like animals appear on a blue ground. The pages are slightly wavy, with soft shadows in the central gutter and an aged, matte surface.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the miniature on the right-hand page, then notice how its frame grows into the vine border that holds the page together. Next, compare the decorated initials: the largest ones open new textual sections, while the smaller red and blue letters guide reading line by line. Finally, look at the uneven edges and the worn binding, signs that this luxury object was also made to be handled.
ContextContexto
The Gotha Missal, dated to about 1375 and made in Paris, is a bound volume in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art. A missal contains texts for celebrating Mass. Its decoration is attributed to the Master of the Boqueteaux and his workshop, an illuminator active at the court of King Charles V of France, who died in 1380. The source notes that it may have belonged to Charles V or to a Valois prince, but this is not provable: it has no royal portraits and no colophon. Its name comes from the German dukes of Gotha, its later owners.

Curious detailDato curioso
Despite its likely royal quality, the manuscript has no portrait of a king and no colophon — the inscription that might have named its maker or patron — which is why its first owner remains unproven.

- How do the text, the coloured initials, and the single miniature work together to guide someone celebrating or following Mass?¿Cómo trabajan juntos el texto, las iniciales de colores y la única miniatura para guiar a quien celebraba o seguía la misa?
- What does the contrast between worn binding and lavish gold decoration suggest about how this book was used and valued?¿Qué sugiere el contraste entre la encuadernación gastada y la decoración lujosa con oro sobre el uso y el valor de este libro?
- If its first patron cannot be proven, what can the quality of the painting still tell us about its intended audience?

If you look closely, this is not paper but vellum, prepared skin in a pale creamy tone, matte and slightly wavy. I notice the mottled brown leather binding, with frayed edges, and how the spine reveals the thickness of the gatherings. The brown gothic ink and the initials in intense red and blue, with touches of gold and very fine white filigree, still glow after more than six centuries. It is handcraft that calls for dim light and very steady hands.

It takes me to the night sky. At the top right, on the page marked with 15, there is a miniature with a golden frame and a blue background where the birth happens under a starry vault. The vines winding through the margins end in little flowers like pointed stars in blue, muted red and gold. For someone in 1375 looking at these pages in Paris, the gold and blue were also a way to paint the light of the cosmos inside the liturgy.

It looks like a giant book of secrets! It has two columns of tiny, tightly packed letters I do not understand because they are in Latin, and big letters in red and blue with tiny little faces hidden inside. Around the edges there are vines with pointy little leaves and golden flowers like small stars. And in the little corner there is a small picture with a golden frame where a lady with a halo is resting, a man is with her and a salmon pink angel leans over, with little sheep above.
