What you would seeLo que verías
An open bound volume fills almost the entire image, seen from above against a dark, neutral background. The two visible pages are made of cream-colored vellum, slightly uneven at the edges, with a fine, matte texture and light aging stains, especially toward the bottom corners. At the center, the gutter sinks into a soft shadow that emphasizes the thickness of the book: on the left, numerous stacked leaves and a worn binding edge can be seen. Each page holds two dense columns of small Gothic script in dark brown ink, written in Latin with frequent abbreviations. The reading is punctuated by rubrics in red and decorated initials in blue and red, some with fine pen flourishing that extends into the margin. On the right page, the folio number '157' appears at the upper right, with red marks above it; on the left, a large initial near the middle and smaller red initials guide the eye. The margins are wide but not empty: there are tiny marginal notes and, at the bottom of the left page, a smaller, faded addition of several lines. The overall light is even, without glare, revealing the irregular surface of the vellum and the precision of the handwriting.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First, look at the opening as a whole and notice how little empty space is left around the four columns of text. Next, look for the blue and red initials: they break up the reading and mark new sections. A tiny, faded note in the lower left margin changes the reading of the page: this was not only a precious object, it was also a working book that someone annotated.
ContextContexto
This is folio 157r of the so-called Gotha Missal, made in Paris, France, around 1375, with ink, tempera, and gold on vellum and a blind-tooled leather binding. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, its decoration is typical of deluxe Parisian books made for aristocratic or royal patrons, and most of it is attributed to the workshop of the Master of the Boqueteaux, active at the court of Charles V, who died in 1380. It may have belonged to the king, but this cannot be proven: it has no royal portraits and no colophon. It was probably made for a Valois prince. It takes its name from the German dukes of Gotha, its later owners.

Curious detailDato curioso
Surprising visual observation: amid the order of the main columns, a much smaller, faded hand added a note at the bottom of the left page — a sign that this luxury manuscript continued to be read and corrected over time.

If you look closely you will see what moves me: the creamy vellum with its matte texture and those soft age stains at the corners. Everything is handmade on a living material that still breathes. I pause at the contrast between the brownish ink of the gothic script and the intense red of the rubrics and the blue of the initials. Notice the sunken spine and the stacked gatherings, the blind-tooled leather and that later addition at the bottom, in fainter ink, which tells us the book kept being used and cared for.

To me this missal is like an orderly sky. The two columns of text are dense constellations of gothic letters, aligned with a precision that reminds me of a star chart. The red rubrics are like guide stars telling you where to navigate the reading, and the blue and red initials mark reference points. Even the number 157 at the top of the page works like a coordinate. It is a portable universe, made in Paris around 1375, designed to help you find your way without getting lost.

It looks like a giant and very old book, open as if someone just left it there. I cannot understand the Latin because it has lots of abbreviations and tiny letters in two columns, but I love the pops of red and blue standing out among all that brown. Did you see the number 157 at the top? I looked for it first. At the bottom there are paler little letters someone added later, like when you leave a hidden note in your favorite notebook.
