What you would seeLo que verías
An open, thick medieval book is seen from above against a dark background, filling most of the frame with its two facing pages of aged vellum. The left side shows the book's fore-edge with many gathered leaves, while the right side shows the worn brown leather binding. Each page holds two dense columns of Gothic script in deep black ink, punctuated by rubrics and headings in vivid red. At the top of several columns are enlarged decorated initials in blue and red with touches of gold that catch the light. The parchment is creased, rippled and stained with pale brown age spots, its edges uneven and darkened at the corners. The right-hand page has a wide empty margin with faint horizontal ruling lines still visible, and the vellum appears thin, slightly translucent and wavy. Even, cool lighting highlights the fibrous texture of the skin, the shadows in the gutter between pages, and subtle tooling on the leather cover.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the rhythm of black text and red rubrics that structure the liturgical content. Then look closely at the illuminated initials in blue and gold that mark new prayers. Finally notice the empty ruled parchment on the right, which reveals the handmade material behind the words.
ContextContexto
This folio is from the Gotha Missal, a bound volume made ca. 1375 in Paris, France, using ink, tempera and gold on vellum with a blind-tooled leather binding. According to source data, its decoration is typical of deluxe Parisian books for aristocratic or royal patrons and is largely attributed to the Master of the Boqueteaux, active at the court of King Charles V (died 1380). The manuscript may have belonged to Charles V, but this is not provable as it lacks royal portraits and a colophon. Its present name comes from the German dukes of Gotha, its later owners, and it is now in the Cleveland Museum of Art.

Curious detailDato curioso
The manuscript is named not for its maker but for its later owners, the German dukes of Gotha, a common practice for medieval books whose original patron is undocumented.

I focus on the yellowed vellum, wrinkled and stained with brown humidity marks. Every ripple and toasted edge shows how this book from around 1375 has survived on parchment. I look at the two columns of dense gothic script in deep black ink, with vivid red rubrics marking the liturgy, and initials in blue, red and gold. The blind-stamped leather binding protects work made with ink, tempera and gold. It is fragile and luxurious at once.

I see this folio like an ordered sky. The two columns of text are like constellations of black gothic letters, aligned by horizontal ruling still visible in the empty margins. The red titles are guide stars for liturgical reading, and the gold initials shine like little suns. The open book photographed from above looks like a map from fourteenth century Paris, lit with even cool light that reveals even the fiber of the parchment.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It looks like a giant, very old book opened like a window. It has yellowed, wrinkled leaves with two rows of tiny crowded letters on each page. Some letters are red and others are bigger with blue and shiny gold. The spine is on the left and you can see lots of little pages stacked on the side. I like that in the top corner there are no letters and you can see little lines where they wrote straight.

Look how the handwritten text is organized, it is not a single block but divided vertically.
