What you would seeLo que verías

An open bound volume is shown frontally against a dark, almost black background, photographed so that both pages occupy nearly the whole frame. The left side reveals the worn brown leather binding and the thickness of many stacked vellum leaves, slightly uneven at the edges. The parchment is cream, matte, and gently undulating, with soft shadows in the central fold. Each page is filled with two dense columns of small Gothic script in dark brown and black ink. Red rubrics interrupt the writing like quiet signals, while small red, blue, and gold initials punctuate the beginnings of sections. Enlarged decorated initials stand out along the columns: deep blue and rose grounds, patterned details, touches of burnished gold, and one small initial near the upper right containing a tiny painted figure. From several large initials, slender stems climb or descend into the margins. They branch into delicate ivy-like leaves in blue, red, pink, green, and gold, with tiny buds and curling tendrils, especially profuse along the left page. Handwritten marks appear at the top, including a small “IX” on the right page. The overall effect is orderly and luminous: a strict grid of text softened by plants that seem to grow out of the letters themselves.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the overall rhythm of the two pages, almost like woven fabric, and then move into the decorated initials. Notice how the leafy stems escape into the margins and guide your eye down the column. That small movement turns a dense liturgical text into a page that also unfolds visually.

ContextContexto

The Gotha Missal, Fol. 18v, Text, is a bound volume made around 1375 in Paris. A missal gathers the texts needed to celebrate Mass. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, its ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, with a blind-tooled leather binding, are typical of deluxe Parisian books made for aristocratic or royal patrons. Most of the decoration is attributed to the workshop of the Master of the Boqueteaux, active at the court of King Charles V, who died in 1380. It may have belonged to Charles V or to a Valois prince, but this is not known for certain: there are no royal portraits or a colophon to prove it. Its name comes from the German dukes of Gotha, its later owners.

Curious detailDato curioso

Surprising visual observation: on pages covered with tiny script, the largest forms are not figures, but letters — initials so enlarged and ornamented that they function as small paintings within the text.

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause on the creamy, matte and slightly wavy vellum that holds two very regular columns of gothic script in dark ink. The red rubrics work as visual guides and the large initials in deep blue, pink and burnished gold concentrate the color. I notice the slender stems that grow from the letters and branch into ivy-like leaves in green, blue and red with touches of gold. It is a Parisian work from around 1375, in ink, tempera and gold on vellum with blind-stamped leather, made to last and to be handled with care in the liturgy.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see the dark background like a night sky that makes the creamy pages glow, like two constellations of text. The two columns per page are like ordered maps, and the initials in night blue, red and gold are larger stars marking the way. The tendrils and tiny leaves climbing the margins look like delicate orbits connecting everything. Even the handwritten IX at the top right looks like a coordinate. It is a missal for the Mass, a book that organized time, just as a calendar watches the cycle of the year.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant open book with so many tiny letters lined up in two columns. I like the big colorful letters in blue, pink and shiny gold, one even has a little painted figure hidden inside. From those letters grow tiny plants with leaves that climb along the edges like playful vines. The edge of the book is brown and you can see many thin pages stacked together. I imagine someone reading it out loud while everyone listened with reverence, following the parts marked in red.
