What you would seeLo que verías

An open book fills almost the entire frame against a dark, flat background. Two broad vellum pages, cream and slightly ivory, show fine wrinkles, wavy edges, and the soft thickness of stacked leaves at the left and lower sides. A worn brown leather binding peeks out along the fore-edge. Each page is written in two dense columns of small Gothic script, mainly in dark brown ink, with headings and highlighted words in red. Within the text, numerous square initials stand out in deep blue, muted red, pink, and burnished gold; some contain tiny painted figures or tightly curled foliage, while others are filled with delicate white filigree on a colored ground. From several initials, slender stems escape into the margins, opening into pointed ivy-like leaves in blue, red, green, and gold. On the left page two large initials form almost a vertical vine along the gutter. There are no human figures at narrative scale: the image is dominated by writing, gold glints, and marginal vegetation. The light is even and frontal, revealing the matte grain of the vellum and the slight sheen of the painted areas. In the upper right corner are a small handwritten '19' and a red Roman numeral.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First take in the symmetry of the open spread and the regularity of its eight columns of writing, then move closer to the decorated initials. Notice how the vines escape from those letters into the margins. That small, creeping ornament changes the page from a block of text into a living, almost breathing object.

ContextContexto

According to its source data, the Gotha Missal was made in Paris around 1375, using ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, with a blind-tooled leather binding. Its decoration is typical of luxury Parisian books produced for aristocratic or royal patrons, and most of it is attributed to the Master of the Boqueteaux and his workshop, active at the court of Charles V, who died in 1380. It may have belonged to the king or to a Valois prince, but this is not known for certain, as it has no royal portraits or colophon. It takes its name from its later owners, the German dukes of Gotha.

Curious detailDato curioso

Without a colophon —the closing note in which scribes sometimes recorded who made a book, when, and for whom— the royal ownership of this missal remains unprovable, however rich its decoration.

This open Missal of Gotha makes me think about hands and materials. I see creamy ivory vellum with fine wrinkles and wavy edges, and the worn brown leather of the binding. Brown ink and red rubrics form two dense columns of tiny gothic script. I pause on the square initials in deep blue, muted red, pink and burnished gold, with delicate white filigree and coiled foliage. From them sprout thin stems with pointed ivy-like leaves in blue, red, green and gold that climb the margins under even, frontal light.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

For me this folio 19r is like an orderly night sky. The two pages are a constellation of text in two columns, with dots of color that are the initials in blue, red, pink and gold. I imagine the red rubrics as guide stars marking the path of reading. The marginal vines with pointed leaves in blue, red, green and gold look like orbits connecting one letter to another. There are no large human figures, just the shine of gold and the creamy vellum reflecting light like the moon.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This giant book looks like a secret garden! It has two creamy pages with lots of tiny crowded letters in two columns and words in red that pop out. What I like most are the big square letters in blue, red, pink and shiny gold, some with little pictures and tangled vines inside. From them grow thin little stems with pointy blue, red, green and golden leaves that stretch along the edges like playful climbing plants. On the left there are two huge letters that look like a climbing vine. I do not see people, just letters and leaves.

No veo personas, solo letras y hojas.
