An open large-format book is seen from above against a dark background, showing two creamy vellum pages that are slightly cockled and spotted with age. Each page holds two columns of Latin text in black and red ink, interspersed with four-line red staves bearing square black musical notes used for medieval liturgical chant. Decorated initials in blue and red with delicate pen flourishing punctuate the text, and a large historiated initial P appears at the top left, from which thin trailing vines sprout. The vines, painted in blue, red, green and gold with tiny ivy leaves, curl along the margins and form a T-shaped border that runs down the gutter and across the top and bottom of the right-hand page. In the lower right corner, set within a cusped frame with a tooled gold ground and a blue and gold border, is a small miniature showing three standing figures: a tonsured cleric in a dark habit praying with raised hands, an acolyte in a blue tunic holding an open book on a lectern, and a smaller kneeling figure. Even lighting highlights the glint of gold and the soft, velvety texture of the parchment, while gentle shadows mark the spine and the fore-edge, revealing the thickness of the volume and its blind-tooled leather binding.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the visual rhythm of the columns and red staves to sense the musicality of the page. Then trace the ivy vines that link both pages like a vegetal architecture. Pause at the small miniature in the lower right; its intimate scale and golden glow shift the reading from liturgical text to devotional scene.

ContextContexto

This bifolium comes from the Gotha Missal, a deluxe manuscript made around 1375 in Paris, France, in ink, tempera and gold on vellum with a blind-tooled leather binding. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art source data, its decoration is typical of high-end Parisian books for aristocratic patrons and is largely attributed to the Master of the Boqueteaux, active at the court of King Charles V, who died in 1380, a style shared by several illuminators around Paris. Although its richness suggests it was likely made for a Valois prince, possibly the king himself, this cannot be proven as the manuscript has no royal portraits and lacks a colophon. Its present name derives from its later owners, the German dukes of Gotha.

Curious detailDato curioso

The Gotha Missal preserves medieval music on a red four-line tetragram, the system that preceded the modern five-line staff, allowing its chants to still be sung today as they were in the 14th century.

This Parisian missal from around 1375 makes me look at the support before the image. The cream-colored vellum is rippled and stained, a sign of time and humidity, and the thickness of the volume is visible along the fore-edge. I notice the black and red ink, the four-line red staves with square notation and the burnished gold of the dotted miniature. The ivy vines in blue, red, green and gold sprouting from the initial P to form a T are fragile and must be shielded from light.

Like a night chart, this folio combines text and music to guide the liturgy. The red four-line staves with black square notes mark the chant to be heard at mass. The gold background of the lobed miniature works as a light that never goes out, while the blue and red initials guide the eye through the two columns. The ivy branches framing the pages are marginal constellations that organize the space and lead toward the dark spine.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant book with secret songs! I see two cream pages with black and red letters and little red lines with black squares that are very old music. There is a huge letter P with colorful vines and little leaves sprouting out to form a T. At the bottom right there is a shiny golden little picture with three people: one praying with hands up, another in a blue tunic holding a book on a stand and a tiny one kneeling. I love how the gold sparkles.
