What you would seeLo que verías
Two cream-colored parchment pages, open and gently curved at the center fold, fill the image against a dark brown background. Each page carries two columns of Latin text in black Gothic script, rhythmically interrupted by rubrics in red and by large initials in blue, red, and burnished gold. Some initials are densely inhabited by curling vines with small leaves in blue, pink, orange, and green that climb into the margins and end in delicate tendrils. The script is compact and even, with frequent abbreviations; certain words are touched with red strokes. A large dark initial with red penwork anchors the lower left of the left page. The parchment shows soft stains, slightly darkened edges, and an aged, worn leather binding visible at the spine and corners, hinting at the book's thickness. In the upper right corner, the number 66 is handwritten. The light is even and diffuse, revealing the matte surface of the vellum and the subtle sheen of the gold, with no figures or scenes — only text, ornament, and the quiet order of the page.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the rhythm of the columns, ink, rubrics, and chant whose neumes alternate and circulate like a silent sound. Fix your view on the large historiated initials, small images in themselves, for there the visual focus of the page gathers. Then allow yourself to follow the coursive strokes, to let the melody of written language hold you, with its elegance.
ContextContexto
This open book is a secular chant book: a processional that also functions as a gradual, made to be shared by several voices. The large format supports that collective performance, with the melody rising in notation above the Latin liturgical text. Gathered are chants for processions and for Mass; a beautiful and very extensive repertoire, both moments central, with almost no Gregorian chant being the most solemn and appropriate for the great feasts of the liturgical year. Its impressive size testifies to its function as a choir book, made to be seen by several singers and to accompany processions of the feast. The decorated, interlaced initials have their place here: their beauty is inseparable from the melody and from a prayer meant to widen the heart, nourish the spirit, and keep it attentive.

Curious detailDato curioso
The small black marks on four-line staves are square notation: reading from left to right, their position on the staff showed whether the pitch rose or fell — the direct ancestor of today's musical notation.

- How does the meaning of a prayer change when it is read alone and in silence, rather than sung from a book shared by a choir?¿Cómo cambia nuestra relación con un texto sagrado cuando la belleza de la página forma parte de la oración?
- What do these decorated initials do to our reading: do they guide the eye, mark a hierarchy, or invite us to pause?¿Qué nos dicen las ramas e iniciales decoradas sobre el tiempo y el cuidado que una comunidad dedicaba a sus libros?
- What traces of use — worn edges, stains, a later page number — help us imagine the hands that turned these pages over the centuries?

I love looking closely at the ivory parchment, with its soft stains and darker edges from centuries of use. You can see how the pages curve gently toward the spine and how the worn leather binding holds many layered sheets. I notice the dense black ink so even, the red rubrics, and the soft matte glow of gold on blue and golden initials. Those slender vines with tiny leaves in pink, orange and green are so delicate and reveal very patient work from around 1375 in Paris.

When I look at these two neat columns I think of constellations made of text. The left and right pages work like a sky split in two, with large initials in blue, red and gold acting like guiding stars. The red rubrics mark the way, like coordinates so the reader does not get lost. The thin vines climbing the margins remind me of delicate orbits drawn with patience. There are no human figures, only that silent order that invites you to find your way calmly.

It looks like a magic book opened like wings. The little black letters stand in two neat columns and then red pops up saying hey, something important happens here! My favorites are the big letters in blue and gold with tiny plants that look like vines with colorful leaves. I imagine someone very patient painting with a super tiny brush. The book looks a bit old, with soft spots and darker edges, but it still shines. I want to count how many little leaves there are.
