What you would seeLo que verías

A small vertical etching in black ink on bone-colored paper, surrounded by uneven, slightly rough margins. On the right, raised on a stepped platform beneath a dark, heavily cross-hatched building, the Virgin sits in profile holding the infant Jesus, whose head is encircled by a bright halo with short radiating lines. An elderly Magus kneels before them, bowing over an offered vessel; beside the steps rest two rounded objects. Behind him stands another richly dressed Magus, seen from behind in a striped, voluminous cloak, while further left a third figure in a turban and cape holds a tall covered cup. The left half is crowded with attendants, banners, a star-tipped staff, spears, and, in the luminous background, mounted figures that suggest camels and a long procession. Above, broken wooden beams slant diagonally from a ruined roof, contrasting with pale classical architecture behind. In the lower right foreground, a seated man in a plumed headdress, seen from behind and holding a pointed weapon, watches the scene. Fine parallel lines model drapery, shadow, and stone. Below the image, handwritten-style lettering reads 'Magi adorant Iesum', 'Callot fecit' and 'Israel excud.'

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start on the right, with the Child's halo, then follow the line of gifts and kneeling bodies toward the crowd on the left. Look next at the seated figure in the lower right corner: set apart from the ceremony, he turns the viewer into another witness. Finally, notice how the dark roof beams cut diagonally across the bright background.

ContextContexto

This etching by Jacques Callot (French, 1592–1635), dated to about 1633–34, belongs to *The Life of the Virgin* and depicts the Adoration of the Magi, the biblical visit of the wise men to the infant Jesus. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, where the work is held in the Prints department, it was given by Mrs. A. Dean Perry in memory of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Belden Greene. Callot was one of the most prolific and influential printmakers of the seventeenth century. The inscription names him as maker and 'Israel' as publisher; the publisher's full identity is not specified in the source data provided here.

Curious detailDato curioso

Surprising visual observation: amid the dense crowd and ceremonial offering, the center of the floor is left almost completely empty and bright, so the smallest figure — the Child — commands the scene through light and placement rather than size.

  1. How does Callot guide our attention to a very small Child within such a crowded scene?¿Cómo logra Callot dirigir nuestra atención hacia un Niño muy pequeño en medio de una escena tan llena de gente?
  2. What role does the seated observer in the foreground play for those looking at the print?¿Qué papel cumple el observador sentado en primer plano para quien mira la estampa?

I pause to look at how this bone-colored paper breathes with its rough, uneven margins. Callot's black ink is worked with very fine lines and parallel hatching that shape the fabrics, the stone and the shadows of the dark building on the right. Notice the halo of short rays around the child Jesus and the contrast between the bright background and that densely hatched architecture. Below you can read by hand Magi adorant Iesum, Callot fecit and Israel excud. It is a small, vertical etching from around 1633-34 that asks you to look slowly to appreciate its delicacy.

For me the key is up and to the left: a spear topped by a star leads the procession. It is the Star of the Magi, the one that announces the Epiphany and brings the wise men from the East to the child. Callot turns it into a banner among the crowd, the camels and the attendants filling the left half. On the right, under the dark building, the Virgin in profile holds Jesus with his luminous halo. The sky is not visible, but that star on the spear is enough to understand that the cosmos also takes part in the story.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

There are so many people! On the left it looks like a parade with flags, horses and even camels in the back. On the right the Virgin is sitting on some steps with baby Jesus shining like a little sun. An old man kneels to give him a gift and there are two round things on the ground, like cushions. Another wise man wears a striped cloak and another holds a tall cup with a lid. And at the bottom there is a man sitting with his back to us with a feathered hat watching everything. I want to count how many hats there are!
