What you would seeLo que verías

The vertical page, surrounded by a wide margin of cream-colored vellum, holds a miniature with a rounded arch, framed by a broad gold border. In the center, on a strip of bright green grass, two women meet. On the left, the Virgin Mary, young and standing, wears a long, deep-blue mantle that falls in heavy folds to her feet; her head is covered, her gaze lowered, her hands gently open. Facing her, an older Elizabeth kneels in a red robe over a golden-yellow skirt, a white veil and a blue cap, extending both hands toward Mary's belly in a gesture of recognition and reverence. Behind them rises a Flemish house with steep orange roofs, chimneys, and small windows, flanked by slender trees with fresh spring foliage. In the distance are more rooftops, a pale blue sky, and a low fence. The border teems with life painted in minute detail: silvery acanthus scrolls, blue, pink, and white flowers, red strawberries, butterflies and a large speckled moth, a small bird with a blue tail, buds and seed pods, all casting tiny shadows on the burnished gold.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the touch between the two women, at the exact center of the scene, and only then move outward to the landscape behind them. Next, look slowly around the border: insects, birds, and fruit seem placed on top of the gold, as if they had just landed there. The contrast between the stillness of the sacred encounter and the small, bustling life of the margins changes the whole mood of the page.

ContextContexto

This folio comes from the Hours of Isabella the Catholic, Queen of Spain (1451–1504), a book of hours made around 1500 in Ghent and Bruges, Flanders, in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, it was illuminated by a circle of at least five painters; the principal one was Alexander Bening, known as the Master of the First Prayerbook of Maximilian. Books of hours were prayer books for the private devotion of laypeople, not clergy. Isabella probably did not commission it herself: it was likely a diplomatic gift, perhaps from Cardinal Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros, though this is not certain.

Curious detailDato curioso

The borders of this circle of Flemish illuminators are famous for their trompe-l'œil effect: flowers, butterflies, and birds are painted with shadows so realistic that they look like real specimens laid on the page.

I always pause at the golden border, where you can see the hand of the Flemish workshop. On burnished gold they painted blue, pink and white flowers, red strawberries and even a large speckled moth with tiny shadows to create a trompe-l’oeil effect. At the center, the deep blue of Mary’s mantle contrasts with the red tunic of Elizabeth kneeling before her. Everything is done in tempera and gold on cream-colored vellum, a delicate work from around 1500 that speaks of the collaborative labor of at least five illuminators in Ghent and Bruges.

I look at the background and that pale blue sky crowning the scene always strikes me, so serene above the orange rooftops and slender spring trees. There are no stars or moon, it is full daylight, as if the encounter happened under a clear, open midday. The Flemish house with its chimneys cuts the horizon and reminds us that this painted sky is also a human landscape. For me, that daylight represents the clarity of a book made for private prayer, to be opened each morning.

I love all the little creatures in the golden frame! There are butterflies, a big spotted moth, a little bird with a blue tail and lots of red strawberries that look real. In the middle there are two ladies, one standing in blue and one kneeling in red and yellow who wants to touch her belly. Behind them there is a house with orange roofs and little trees. It looks like the border is alive and wants to jump into the story. I would count the flowers so I would not get bored while praying.
