What you would seeLo que verías

A single manuscript page is shown centered on a wide, cream-colored margin, with the small number 27 at the upper right. In the middle, a rectangular block of Latin text in dark brown and black ink, with rubrics and small initials in red, blue, and gold, occupies just over half the surface. It is headed by a very large initial D in grey-blue and copper tones, filled with a dense brown pattern of scrolls and small white dots, outlined as if carved or embossed. Around the text runs a broad border on a matte olive-gold ground. Painted with trompe-l'oeil realism and fine drop shadows, it is scattered with pink carnations and pinks, white daisies, red poppies and roses, blue cornflowers and violets, pale irises and columbines, a ripe strawberry, and small white and yellow flowers. Butterflies, a pale moth, and a snail with a dark shell rest among them. The vellum is smooth and slightly luminous; the painting is minute, crisp, and jewel-like, with no human figures. The overall scale feels intimate, like a page to be held close in the hands.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the large initial and let the text set the rhythm, then move slowly outward to the border. Notice how each flower, insect, and fruit casts a small shadow and seems to rest on top of the page. That detail turns a frame into a garden laid over the parchment.

ContextContexto

This is folio 127r of a Book of Hours made around 1500 in Ghent and Bruges, Flanders, in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, it was illuminated by a circle of at least five painters; the principal illuminator was Alexander Bening, identified here as the Master of the First Prayerbook of Maximilian. The book was made for the private devotion of a layperson, Isabella the Catholic, Queen of Spain (1451–1504), whose coat of arms appears on the frontispiece. It was probably not commissioned by her, but received as a diplomatic gift, perhaps from Cardinal Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros; that detail is not certain.

Curious detailDato curioso

Surprising visual observation: among the flowers there is a snail at the upper right and several butterflies and moths whose tiny shadows make them look as if they had just landed on the page and could fly away.

If you look closely you will see why I love this vellum from around 1500 made in Ghent and Bruges. It is smooth and luminous and holds ink, tempera and gold without cracking. I linger on the huge D initial with its brown scrollwork and little white dots and on the golden olive green border. Everything is painted in trompe-l'oeil with the finest shadows: pink carnations, daisies, poppies and that dark-shelled snail seem to rest on the page. It is jewel-like work meant to be held close.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I spend nights hunting for points in the sky and here I do the same but on a cream page numbered 27 at the top. At the center there is a rectangle of Latin text with rubrics in red and blue and a giant D that looks carved. Around it, on an olive green ground, orbit like nearby constellations a strawberry, pale irises, blue cornflowers and red roses. I also spot butterflies, a pale moth and a snail. No human figures, just nature observed with patience, like an intimate atlas.

This page looks like a magic garden you can hold in your hands! In the middle there are lots of little letters in Latin and a huge letter D in gray and copper with tiny white dots. Around it, on a green frame, there are flowers everywhere: pink carnations, white daisies, red poppies and even a little strawberry. If you look carefully you find hidden critters: colorful butterflies, a moth and a tiny snail with its dark little house. You just want to count every little flower one by one.

  1. #1

I am red outside and small and sweet, hidden among flowers and shadows on the green border. What little fruit am I?

    HintPista

Look on the olive green margin, near the flowers painted with shadows; it is not a flower, it is edible.

  2. #2

I am not a flower or a letter, I have a dark little house and move slowly along the illuminated border. What little creature am I?

    HintPista

Check the wide border painted in trompe-l'oeil; among butterflies and carnations there is one that leaves a slow trail.

  3. #3

At the top right of the cream page there is a small number marking the leaf. What number is it?

    HintPista

Look at the upper right corner, outside the block of Latin text.
