This is folio 185v from the Hours of Isabella the Catholic, Queen of Spain (1451–1504), a Flemish book of hours made around 1500 in Ghent and Bruges with ink, tempera and gold on vellum. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, it was illuminated by a highly organized circle of at least five painters; the principal illuminator was Alexander Bening, named here as Master of the First Prayerbook of Maximillian, working with associates. Books of hours were made for the private devotion of laypeople, not only clergy. Isabella's coat of arms appears on the frontispiece. She probably did not commission it herself; it was likely a diplomatic gift, perhaps from Cardinal Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros, though this is not known for certain.

If you look closely you will see why this folio is still vivid after more than five hundred years. It is painted in tempera and gold on vellum, that very smooth creamy parchment you see in the background. The grass-green border is separated by a super fine red line and the flowers look cut out and pasted on top, with a tiny shadow that creates that Flemish trompe-l'oeil effect. I focus on the blood in vertical streaks over the dark diamond-patterned mesh and on the golden sky at the top, all with colors still saturated thanks to well-prepared vellum.

I always look for the sky in these miniatures and here the sky is gold, not blue. At the top of the arch there is a golden band that does not show a time of day but the eternal light of private devotion. Below opens a very earthly landscape of green hills, round-topped trees and grayish rocks. I love that contrast: the saint with his blue-gray stone and his weary body is between two worlds, the detailed Flemish nature and that golden background that is pure symbol, as if time stood still over Ghent and Bruges around 1500.

Behind him there is a little brown lion just sitting and watching him, like a pet. And hanging from a dry branch is his red cloak all folded. What I like most is the green frame around everything: it is full of giant flowers like orange-red poppies, pink carnations and white daisies, and even a white and pink butterfly flying. It looks like a garden pasted around it.
