What you would seeLo que verías
The image shows a single manuscript page photographed against its own cream-colored vellum, which fills most of the frame with wide, empty, slightly warm margins. At the center is the text block, framed by a broad, muted border in gray-green and dusty blue, decorated with very pale foliage, flower heads in faded pink and white, and ghostly curving stems. On the left, a narrow vertical panel stands out sharply: on a matte gold-ochre ground, three flowers are painted with great precision, a soft yellow bloom at the top, a vivid blue five-petaled flower in the middle, and a white-and-orange bud below, each with slender green stems and leaves. Resting on the blue flower is a small butterfly with orange, gray, and blue wings and thin antennae. To the right of the panel, a few lines of dark Gothic script remain legible, ending in "Amen" with a small red and gold mark, while below them the rest of the writing appears pale gray, reversed and blurred. The light is even and soft, with no harsh shadows; textures alternate between the smooth skin of the vellum, the granular gold ground, and the delicate, almost trompe-l'oeil modelling of petals and wings. Everything is small in scale, quiet, and meant to be held close.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First look at the golden strip on the left, the only fully opaque and luminous area, and follow the flowers from top to bottom. Then notice the butterfly at the center, a pause between bloom and text. Finally, look through the page: the main lesson of this folio is not only what was painted on it, but what shows through from the other side.
ContextContexto
This is folio 192v from the Hours of Isabella the Catholic, Queen of Spain, made around 1500 in Ghent and Bruges, Flanders, in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, it was illuminated by a circle of at least five organized painters; the principal artist was Alexander Bening, identified here as the Master of the First Prayer Book of Maximilian. A book of hours served the private devotion of a layperson. Isabella (1451–1504) probably did not commission it herself: it was likely a diplomatic gift, perhaps from Cardinal Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros, though this is not known for certain.

Curious detailDato curioso
A surprising visual fact: the gray text that seems erased is not damage, but lettering from the other side of the sheet showing through the thin, translucent vellum, and it therefore reads in mirror image.

Look closely at the creamy vellum and you will see why this folio moves us. It is prepared skin, smooth and warm, letting the text from the other side show through as a grey, blurry mirror image, except for that final Amen in dark ink with hints of red and gold. The wide border in greyish green and dusty blue is quite faded, but the matte golden strip keeps its tempera intact: modelled petals, thin leaves and a tiny butterfly in orange and blue. It is tiny work, made to be seen slowly in soft light.

Here the whole page works like a sky. The creamy parchment is the empty firmament and the block of text is the dark constellation we try to read. On the left margin the golden strip appears like an observation window: three flowers aligned vertically, a soft yellow one on top, an intense blue one in the middle and a white and orange bud below. On the blue one rests a butterfly with orange, grey and blue wings. It is delicate trompe l'oeil, a miniature universe meant to hold your gaze and invite meditation.

I like to count the little flowers on the golden stripe. On top there is a light yellow one, in the middle a blue one with five petals and at the bottom a tiny white bud with orange. And on the blue one there is a teeny butterfly with orange wings and blue dots! The rest of the page looks blurry and backwards, like a ghost of letters, but at the end you can still read Amen in red and gold. The borders with pink flowers and leaves look very old and pale, as if they were sleeping all around.

It is the last legible word before the text turns grey and blurry through the vellum.
