What you would seeLo que verías

The image shows a richly illuminated calendar page on vellum, set against a warm golden-ochre background with densely decorated borders. At the center is a block of Latin text in black and red ink, in a precise Gothic script, with illuminated initials in blue and burnished gold and rubricated headings listing the feasts of January, including the Epiphany of the Lord. Surrounding the text is a naturalistic frame painted with extraordinary detail: velvety red roses and carnations, blue and white pansies, small blue violets, white daisies with yellow centers, and delicate wildflowers on thin green stems. Among the blossoms hover insects and a pale white moth with translucent wings near the top edge, and a fuzzy bumblebee on the right side. Light models each petal with soft shadows and a trompe-l'oeil effect, suggesting dew and texture as if the flowers had been scattered on the page. At the bottom, set into a small circular medallion with a pearled silvery frame, is a tiny genre scene: two peasants, a man in a blue doublet and a woman in a white headdress and green dress, seated at a table covered with a white cloth, sharing a meal by a hearth. The interior behind them is rendered in muted grays and pinks. The whole composition unites fine calligraphy, glowing gold, and almost microscopic painting, highly characteristic of late medieval Flemish illumination.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the central text and its gilded initials, then allow your eye to wander through the border, where each flower and insect is painted as if it had just landed. Finally focus on the small circular vignette at the bottom; that intimate, everyday scene turns a calendar page into a window onto life in January.

ContextContexto

According to information from the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is the Book of Hours of Isabella the Catholic (1451–1504), Queen of Spain, illuminated around 1500 in Flanders, in Ghent and Bruges. It was produced by a circle of at least five highly organized illuminators, led by Alexander Bening, known as the Master of the First Prayerbook of Maximilian (Flemish, c. 1444–1519). The medium is ink, tempera and gold on vellum. Manuscripts from this group are renowned for border decoration with realistically painted flowers, birds and butterflies. Although the queen's coat of arms appears on the frontispiece, the book was probably not commissioned by her directly but received as a diplomatic gift, perhaps from Cardinal Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros, who sought her patronage.

Curious detailDato curioso

The borders created by this Flemish circle were celebrated for their scattered still-life effect, with flowers and insects casting soft shadows on a gold ground, an illusionistic invention that anticipated later still-life painting.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause on the gilded ochre vellum and how well the tempera and gold have survived. Look at the blue and gold initials and the black and red ink of the January calendar: the gothic script is precise and steady. The border is a feat of Flemish miniature: roses with velvety petals, daisies with yellow centers, pansies and violets with soft shading and trompe-l'oeil effect. That furry bumblebee and the white butterfly with translucent wings seem to truly alight, with dewdrops that still glisten.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

For me this page is a calendar joining sky and earth. At the top you read January and the feast of the Epiphany in Latin, marking liturgical time. Below, the round medallion with its pearled frame shows peasant life in winter: a man in a blue jacket and a woman with a white headdress and green dress share a table with a white cloth by the fire. It is the month of cold and shelter. The year was measured like this, with feasts, seasons and daily scenes recalling when to sow, rest and celebrate.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

There are so many flowers it looks like a garden spilling out of the frame! I see red roses, white daisies with yellow centers, blue pansies and violets, all around the text. If you look carefully you find a white butterfly at the top and a fuzzy bumblebee on the right, as if playing among the flowers. Down below there is a tiny circle like a window: inside two people eat close together with a white tablecloth. I like to imagine they feel cozy by the fire while outside it is winter.
