What you would seeLo que verías

In the foreground, on a pale creamy vellum page with a soft matte sheen, a dense block of Latin text in small black Gothic script runs in perfectly straight lines. To the left of the writing, a narrow vertical border with a warm golden-ochre ground holds six blossoms and a single white butterfly with delicate grey veining on its wings. The flowers are rendered with striking botanical naturalism: layered pink and white petals around yellow centers, a textured raspberry-red bloom, and a pale blue thistle-like flower shown from the side revealing its green calyx. Thin, curving green stems cast faint soft shadows onto the gold, producing a trompe-l'oeil effect as if real specimens were laid on the page. The light is even and clear, highlighting the velvety texture of petals and the powdery surface of the butterfly wings. Each verse begins with a small decorated initial in blue and burnished gold with intricate interlace. The overall impression is luminous, intimate and exquisitely detailed, inviting close, slow looking at miniature scale.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the orderly column of Gothic text, then let your eye drift to the floral border on the left. Notice how each blossom and the butterfly casts a subtle shadow on the gold ground, turning a flat margin into a space where nature seems to rest on the parchment.

ContextContexto

This folio comes from a book of hours illuminated around 1500 in Ghent and Bruges, Flanders, by the circle of the Master of the First Prayerbook of Maximilian, led by Alexander Bening. It is executed in ink, tempera and gold on vellum. Books of hours were made for private lay devotion rather than for clergy. This copy belonged to Isabella the Catholic, Queen of Spain (1451–1504), whose coat of arms appears on the frontispiece. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, it was probably not commissioned by the Queen herself but presented as a diplomatic gift to secure her patronage, perhaps from Cardinal Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros, who became her confessor in 1492. The manuscript is celebrated for its naturalistic borders of flowers, birds and butterflies.

Curious detailDato curioso

Flemish illuminators in this group pioneered naturalistic borders that cast shadows, creating an early trompe-l'oeil illusion that would later influence European still-life painting.

The conservatorLa restauradora

As a conservator I focus on the pale creamy support, a luminous vellum prepared to receive ink, tempera and gold. I am amazed by the precision of the naturalistic border on a golden ochre ground: six flowers and a white butterfly resting with soft shadows that create a trompe-l'oeil effect. The pink petals, the granular red flower and the pale blue one keep their tempera intact. The initials in blue and gold still shine. It is miniature work from around 1500 that demands even light and very steady hands.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

As an amateur astronomer I see a small ordered universe on this page. The block of Latin text in gothic script is like a constellation of signs rigorously aligned, while the marginal strip is a naturalistic field of observation. Those six flowers and the white butterfly look like collected specimens carefully recorded, lit with even light that reveals every petal and vein. It reminds me how around 1500 science and devotion shared the same attentive gaze toward nature.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This page looks like a garden stuck onto the book! On the left I see a golden strip with six pretty flowers and a white butterfly with grey little wings. There are pink flowers with yellow centers, a red one that looks like a raspberry and a light blue one. The little green stems cast a shadow as if they were really resting there. Next to them there are many small black letters and at the start blue letters with gold that shine. I want to count the flowers and touch the butterfly.

Carefully count the natural elements on the golden strip at the margin: how many flowers appear alongside the white butterfly?

    HintPista

Look at the vertical golden ochre strip to the left of the text, count each pink, red and blue blossom.

  2. #2

What color is the narrow strip where the flowers and the butterfly are resting?

    HintPista

It is not the creamy parchment in the center, but the background of the decorated border on the left.

  3. #3

Find the small light-winged insect with grey veins on the border: what animal is it?

    HintPista

It is at the end of the strip, among the pink flowers and the granular red flower.
