What you would seeLo que verías

A single vellum page, creamy and slightly uneven, fills most of the frame against a pale background. Thin, barely visible ruling lines organize the leaf, and a small handwritten “40” appears at the upper and lower right. The text block occupies the left and center, written in dense dark-brown Gothic script in Latin, with about twenty lines broken by smaller red rubrics that mark liturgical cues. Three illuminated initials punctuate the column: a large blue-and-gold D at the top, a blue E with gold and reddish ornament below it, and a smaller Roman numeral-like initial near the bottom. Fine white filigree curls inside the colored letters. To the right of the text runs a narrow vertical border on a matte sandy-gold ground. Painted on it with striking naturalism are four blue violet-like flowers with darker centers and slender curved green stems, arranged diagonally from top to bottom. Between the second and third flowers rests a white butterfly seen in profile, with dark body, delicate legs, and antennae. Tiny painted shadows under petals, insect, and stems lift them slightly from the surface, as if real specimens had been placed on the parchment.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow a line of text until a red heading or a large initial interrupts it; note how these color cues guide reading without modern punctuation or headings. Then move to the right-hand border and look at the shadows beneath each petal. The page stops being only writing and becomes a flat surface where painted plants seem to rest.

ContextContexto

This is folio 40 recto from a book of hours made around 1500 in Ghent and Bruges, Flanders, with ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, it was illuminated by a circle of at least five painters; the principal artist was Alexander Bening, known in the source as the Master of the First Prayerbook of Maximilian. The book was intended for the private devotion of Isabella the Catholic, Queen of Spain (1451–1504), whose coat of arms appears on the frontispiece. It was probably not commissioned by her; it may have been a diplomatic gift, perhaps from Cardinal Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros, but that is not known for certain.

Curious detailDato curioso

The violets and the butterfly are not set into the margin like flat ornaments: each casts a faint shadow on the golden ground, a trompe-l'oeil effect that makes them look as if they had just been laid down on the page.

I focus on the creamy vellum and how light reveals its slightly uneven surface and the faint ruling that orders about twenty lines of dark brown gothic script. The red rubrics and three illuminated initials, a large D at top, an E in the middle and a smaller one below, with white scrollwork on blue and gold, show tempera and gold applied with precision. To the right, the sandy gold border with four blue violets and a white butterfly reveals soft painted shadows that create the Flemish trompe l’oeil effect from around 1500.

I see this page as a small ordered sky. The block of Latin text works like a regular constellation of about twenty lines, ruled and steady, while the red rubrics act as markers of liturgical time. The three blue and gold initials serve as guiding stars that separate passages. On the golden margin, the four diagonal blue violets and the white butterfly in profile look like specimens observed with a magnifier, captured with Flemish naturalism on vellum around 1500 for private devotion.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

I love searching for things on this page! On the left there are many little brown letters together and some red ones, and three big pretty blue and gold letters that look like treasures. On the right, on a golden path, there are four little blue flowers with green stems going up diagonally. And in the middle there is a tiny white butterfly with thin antennae that looks like it just stopped to rest! I like that the flowers and butterfly look like they were really placed on top.
