What you would seeLo que verías

A single page of aged vellum, pale cream in tone, with fine lines and slightly irregular edges. Most of the visible surface is empty margin; at the center-left is a compact block of handwritten text in dark black-brown ink, in a dense Gothic script with several lines to a paragraph. Some words and headings stand out in red ink, marking the rhythm of the prayer. Two illuminated initials, a D and a C, open sections of the text: they are painted in blue, pink, and burnished gold, with delicate white ornament, and they glow against the dark lettering. To the right of the text, occupying its full height, is a narrow vertical border on a matte tan-gold ground. On it are arranged, with generous space between them, naturalistic motifs painted with almost scientific precision: at the top, a drooping blue pansy with a green stem and leaf; below, a small white flower with a yellow center and a pale yellow butterfly; then a thistle with a magenta-pink head, prickly green leaves, and closed buds; and at the bottom, a pansy in white, magenta, and yellow. Each plant casts a faint shadow, creating the illusion that it has just been placed on the page. There are no human figures. The overall impression is one of order, stillness, and minute care.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the text and notice how the gold initials guide the eye, then move to the right border. There, look for the insects' shadows and the thistle's spines: that illusion of real plants lying on the page changes the folio from something to be read into something also to be contemplated.

ContextContexto

This is folio 48r of the Book of Hours of Isabella the Catholic, Queen of Spain (1451–1504), made around 1500 in Ghent and Bruges, Flanders, in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, it was illuminated by a circle of at least five painters; the principal illuminator was Alexander Bening, identified there as the Master of the First Prayer Book of Maximilian. Books of hours were prayer books for the private devotion of laypeople. It is unlikely that Isabella commissioned it herself; it was probably a diplomatic gift, perhaps from Cardinal Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros, though this is not known for certain.

Curious detailDato curioso

The border flowers are painted with cast shadows, in trompe-l'oeil fashion, so that they appear to be resting on top of the parchment rather than drawn within it.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What changes in devotional reading when the margins are filled with flowers and insects as lifelike as these?¿Qué cambia en la lectura devocional cuando los márgenes se llenan de flores e insectos tan parecidos a los reales?
  2. For whom was a book like this made to be seen: only its owner, or also those she wished to impress?¿Para quién estaba pensado que se viera un libro así: solo para su dueña, o también para quienes ella quisiera impresionar?
  3. How do the gold of the initials and the humble thistle of the border converse on the same page?¿Cómo dialogan en la misma página el oro de las iniciales y el cardo humilde del margen?

I pause to look at the surface of this pale cream parchment, so thin and even. I notice the block of gothic text in dark brownish black ink and the red rubrics that guide the reading. The initials D and C, in blue, pink and burnished gold, still shine without flaking. What amazes me most is the golden margin: each pansy, thistle and pale yellow butterfly casts a soft shadow, a trompe-l’oeil that makes us believe they are truly resting on the page.

This page reminds me of a clear night sky. The empty cream colored margin is like silent vastness, and the dense block of text is an orderly constellation. The two illuminated initials in blue and gold are bright stars marking the way. On the golden margin, the flowers spaced with so much air make me think of planets and a butterfly crossing space. Everything conveys stillness, order and the feeling of a miniature universe contained in parchment.

This sheet looks like the prettiest notebook in the world. It has lots of tiny black letters packed together and some words in red. I love the two big letters in blue and pink with shiny gold. Next to them, on a golden background, there are little flowers that look really stuck on because they have tiny shadows. I see a blue pansy, a little white flower, a yellow butterfly, a pinkish thistle with spines and another pansy with three colors. There are no people, just calm flowers.
