What you would seeLo que verías

A single page of aged vellum is shown centered on a large, almost empty cream background. In the upper right corner, the number 75 is barely visible. The written area occupies the upper left: about seventeen lines in dense black Gothic script, with short passages and letters in dark red. Very faint reddish vertical and horizontal ruling lines frame the text and extend down the blank lower half of the leaf. Several initials stand out in burnt orange with white filigree, small blue circles, and fine dot patterns; one larger initial at the lower left encloses cream and gold shapes. To the right of the text is a vertical rectangular border in matte gold and tan, like a shaft of warm earth. On it are painted only four flowers, widely spaced, with thin green stems and tiny leaves: at the top, a white flower with a yellow center; below it, a light-blue flower; then a small yellow and blue blossom; and at the bottom, a pink flower with ruffled petals. The paint looks smooth and precise, with almost no shadow. The overall scale feels intimate and small, made to be held in the hands and read up close.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the column of text and notice how the decorated initials mark pauses for reading or reciting. Then move to the golden border and compare the flowers' almost scientific delicacy with the regularity of the script. That contrast, between measured prayer and ephemeral nature, changes the page from a simple text into an object for contemplation.

ContextContexto

This is folio 75r of a book of hours made around 1500 in Ghent and Bruges, Flanders, in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, it was illuminated by a circle of at least five painters, led by Alexander Bening, known as the Master of the First Prayerbook of Maximilian. Books of hours were intended for the private devotion of laypeople. This one is associated with Isabella the Catholic, Queen of Spain (1451–1504), whose coat of arms appears on the frontispiece. It was probably not commissioned by her; it may have been a diplomatic gift, perhaps from Cardinal Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros, although this is not known for certain.

Curious detailDato curioso

At the bottom of the page, in red and black ink, one can read the beginning of 'Magnificat anima mea', the opening words in Latin of Mary's song in the Gospel of Luke, a prayer recited daily at vespers.

I focus on the materials: a sheet of vellum that has aged to a warm cream tone. At the top left are seventeen lines in dense black gothic script, with passages in dark red and a very pale reddish ruling that almost fades in the lower blank area. I notice the initials in burnt orange with white filigree and tiny dots, and the larger initial below with cream and gold inside. On the right, the earthy matte gold band is tempera and gold laid very smoothly; on it, four flowers are painted with precise, flat strokes and very thin green stems, no shading, tiny to be seen up close.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this page like a tamed night sky. The cream background is the void and the block of text at the top is a dense, orderly constellation. The gold band on the right feels like a strip of horizon at dusk. On it, four separate flowers shine like distinct stars: the white one with a yellow center at the top, then the light blue, then the small yellow and blue, and finally the ruffled pink at the bottom. They are not clustered, they float with space between them, as if someone had placed four solitary luminaries to accompany close, intimate reading and prayer.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This page looks tiny, like you could hold it with both hands and read it really close up. At the top there are lots of little black letters packed together and some red ones, and big orange letters with swirly decorations and blue dots that I like a lot. Below there is a lot of empty white space and faint red lines. What I like most is the golden border on the right, it looks like a shiny dirt path, and there are just four little flowers scattered there, each in its own spot, with super thin green stems. There are no other pictures, just that.

  1. #1

If you look at the golden margin on the right, how many painted flowers can you count, spaced apart from each other?

    HintPista

Look at the earthy vertical band to the right of the text: go from top to bottom and count each thin green stem with its flower.

  2. #2

In the upper right corner of the page, what number can you faintly see on the cream background?

    HintPista

Look at the top, away from the dark text block, for a small light number near the edge.
