What you would seeLo que verías

The image shows a manuscript vellum page seen straight on, with dense Latin text in black ink and rubrics in red, surrounded by wide pale margins. On the left runs a vertical rectangular strip with a matte burnished gold ground, holding five flowers painted in highly naturalistic detail and a small butterfly. At the top sits a large red flower with slightly ruffled petals and a dark center, softly shaded to suggest volume. Below, a round white pom-pom blossom, a light blue five-petalled flower, and a short stem with two green leaves. Further down, a full red rose with layered petals and a yellow center, next to a pale butterfly with translucent, veined wings that seems to rest on a petal. At the bottom, another pale blue flower and a second white button bloom. Each blossom casts a faint shadow onto the gold, creating a trompe-l’œil effect as if pinned to the folio. The text is in a tight Gothic script; two small historiated initials in burnished gold and blue punctuate the column. The vellum shows a gentle central cockling and faint creases, lit evenly to highlight the sheen of the gold and the delicacy of the pigments.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the golden border on the left and follow the invisible stem linking the blooms from top to bottom. Notice how the butterfly and the soft cast shadows on the gold create an illusion of depth on a flat page. Then look at the two gilded initials within the text and how the gold of the margin echoes the gold in the letters.

ContextContexto

This is folio 81v from the Hours of Isabella the Catholic (1451–1504), Queen of Spain, held by the Cleveland Museum of Art. It is a Flemish book of hours made around 1500 by a circle of at least five illuminators active in Ghent and Bruges, led principally by Alexander Bening and associates including the Master of the First Prayerbook of Maximilian. The museum records the medium as ink, tempera and gold on vellum and notes that Isabella’s coat of arms adorns the frontispiece. The book was likely not commissioned by the queen herself but received as a diplomatic gift, perhaps from Cardinal Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros. Manuscripts from this group are renowned for border decoration with realistically painted flowers, birds and butterflies, as seen here.

Curious detailDato curioso

Trompe-l’œil strewn-flower borders on gold or flat colour grounds are a hallmark of Flemish illumination from Ghent and Bruges around 1470–1510, and the Hours of Isabella is a frequently cited example of that botanical fashion.

If you look closely, you will see why this folio fascinates me. The parchment is slightly cockled but the pigments remain intact and the burnished gold still shines on the vellum. What moves me most is that vertical border with a matte gold background where five flowers look pinned with a trompe-l’œil effect. Each petal casts a soft shadow on the gold, and the pale-winged butterfly seems about to take flight. It is tempera and gold on vellum made around 1500, and its state of preservation is exemplary.

I do not know much about prayer, but I do know about patient observation. This page uses the same method as a starry sky: a matte gold background like a celestial vault and, on top, five flowers that act like constellations. There is a red rose with a yellow center, two light blue five-petaled flowers, two fluffy white ones, and a pale butterfly that breaks the symmetry like a comet. The illuminators from Ghent and Bruges painted nature with almost scientific precision to invite careful contemplation.

Look at all the little flowers! On the left there is a shiny gold strip like a giant sticker. I count five main flowers, two red ones, two light blue ones, and some fluffy white ones. My favorite is the red rose at the top and the little butterfly sitting on a petal as if it is resting. It looks like the flowers make tiny shadows on the gold, as if someone really glued them on. And next to them there are tiny black and red letters all squeezed together and two big gold and blue letters.
