A single flat, elongated object stands vertically in the center against a smooth, light gray background. It is a pale beige plaque, much taller than it is wide, with slightly irregular sides, a rounded top, and a nearly straight, worn bottom edge. It occupies almost the full height of the image. The material looks like bone: matte, slightly grainy, with fine vertical fibers, short dark flecks, small cracks, and a soft sheen along the right edge. The lower two-thirds are plain and undecorated, like a long body left blank. Decoration is concentrated in the upper third, where incised dots and small concentric circles form a stylized face. Two almond-shaped eyes with pointed corners stare forward; between and below them, dotted lines suggest a nose and eyebrows. Larger circles with dotted halos mark the cheeks, and rows of ring-and-dot motifs frame the face and outline a rounded headdress or head covering above it, with curling forms at the center. On the upper right edge there are two small, dark perforations. At upper left a piece is missing, creating a notch. The overall impression is of a tiny, solemn, frontal figure, fragile and worn.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First look at the blank lower part, then rise to the face crowded into the top third. Notice how a few dots and circles create eyes, cheeks, and perhaps jewelry or a headdress. The two small holes on the right edge change the reading: this is not just a drawing on bone, but an object that may have been attached, hung, or handled.

ContextContexto

The source identifies this piece as a figurine from Iran in the early Islamic period, dated between the 700s and 900s, by an unknown maker. It is made of incised bone and belongs to the Cleveland Museum of Art, as a Gift of Edward Gans. The source gives no description, exact place of manufacture, or original use, so its function is not known. It was probably a small personal or decorative object. Its abstract face, made with dots and concentric circles, shows how a figurative effect could be achieved with very simple carved marks.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual detail is that the entire figure is suggested in only the upper third of the plaque: the long, undecorated lower section works like a body or garment without arms, folds, or feet ever being drawn.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What might the long blank section have meant: a body, a garment, or simply an unfinished surface?¿Qué pudo representar la larga sección sin decorar: un cuerpo, una prenda o simplemente una superficie sin terminar?
  2. Who might have held or used such a small figure, and on what occasions?¿Quién pudo tener o usar una figurilla tan pequeña, y en qué momentos?
  3. How do the two perforations and the chipped edge change what we imagine about the object's life?¿Cómo cambian los dos agujeros y el borde roto lo que imaginamos sobre la vida de este objeto?

I focus on the material, because it tells the story of time. It is bone, matte and porous, with vertical fibers, dark veins and tiny cracks that speak of centuries of use and wear. I see the worn lower edge, the notch on the left and the soft polished sheen on the right edge. At the top, the incision is delicate yet firm: dots and concentric circles that create a face without complex lines. The two small perforations suggest it was hung or sewn onto something. It is fragile, minimal and very human.

When I look at this bone plaque from Iran, from the 8th to 9th century, I think of constellations. The face is not drawn with continuous strokes, but with dots and circles, like stars joined by imagination. Two almond-shaped eyes, cheeks marked by large circles surrounded by tiny dots and a headdress on top, all made with the dot-and-circle technique. We do not know its original use, but I like to think someone carried it with them, like a small portable sky, orderly and serene.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a long beige popsicle stick, but it is made of bone and has a little face hidden at the top. I only see two pointy eyes staring at me, round cheeks and lots of tiny dots around them like freckles or stars. The bottom is smooth and empty, as if they forgot to draw the body clothes. It has two little holes on top and a small bite on the side where a piece is missing. I like it because it is simple and mysterious, like a secret drawing.
