What you would seeLo que verías
At the center, against a soft gradient from light gray to charcoal, stands a full-length porcelain figure of a woman facing forward with a slight turn. Her face is oval and very pale, with faint pink cheeks, narrow half-closed eyes, thin brows, and a small mouth open in a calm, gentle smile. Her hair is glossy black, styled in a high, full coiffure with side wings framing the face. She wears a layered kimono: an under-robe covered with a tight lattice of orange-red diamonds outlined in dark lines on a white ground, cinched with a broad, shiny black sash. Over it she wears an open uchikake, a long outer jacket with wide sleeves, on a milky white ground densely hand-painted with exuberant flowers in vivid orange, soft yellow, blue and green, with delicate green foliage and fine linear details. Her left hand lightly holds the edge of the outer robe at chest height, while her right hand rests relaxed near the hip. The porcelain surface is smooth and glazed, with a soft sheen, subtle crazing, and areas where the enamel looks almost watercolor-like in its loose application. Tiny, very white feet peek from beneath the hem. The lighting is even and frontal, emphasizing the luster of the glaze and the contrast between the immaculate white of the skin and the lively floral textile.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the pale face and restrained smile, then move down to the hands and layered garments. Notice the tension between the strict orange lattice of the under-kimono and the free, scattered blossoms on the outer robe, where Kakiemon enamel skill is most visible. Finish with the tiny feet and the luminous milky white that holds the whole composition together.
ContextContexto
According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this work dates to around 1690, in Japan’s Edo period (1615–1868), and was made in Hizen Province, present-day Saga Prefecture on Kyushu island. It is porcelain with overglaze color enamels, classified as Hizen ware of the Kakiemon type. It was produced by the Sakaida family workshop, whose head has borne the given name Kakiemon for many generations, giving the ware its name. The studio is noted for being among the earliest in Japan to use multicolor overglaze enamel and for the milky white tone of its porcelain. Figures like this, dressed in layered robes and a floral uchikake jacket, were probably derived from dolls modeled after courtesans. The individual maker is not known.

Curious detailDato curioso
Kakiemon’s distinctive milky white porcelain, called nigoshide, was so admired in Europe that it was copied by early European factories such as Meissen in Germany in the 18th century.

I pause on the surface. I see that milky white so characteristic of Kakiemon, smooth and glossy, and how the overglaze enamels sit on top without melting in. The intense orange and soft yellow are not under the glaze, they were painted afterwards and fired again. If you look closely, you notice the subtle crackle and the loose, almost watercolor-like brushwork of the flowers on the uchikake. It is fragile and luminous, and it has reached us from around 1690 cared for with great respect.

I see her like an inverted night sky. The light gray background is the void and she is a constellation of color on immaculate white. The milky white uchikake is like a milky way and the orange and blue flowers are stars bursting with their own light. Even her shiny black hair reminds me of a gathered eclipse. It is from around 1690, from the Edo period, and it still shines because someone knew how to fix light with enamel, just as we fix stars on a chart.

She looks like a princess you cannot hug because she is made of porcelain and could break. Her face is very pale with pink cheeks and her kimono is full of little orange diamonds and big colorful flowers. Her black sash shines a lot and her tiny little feet peek out at the bottom. She is holding her long coat as if she is about to dance. I like that she smiles just a little, as if she knows a pretty secret and does not want to tell it yet.
