What you would seeLo que verías

A single vertical page of a manuscript on warm, creamy vellum, slightly irregular at the edges and darkened along the left gutter where it joins the binding. The right two-thirds are occupied by a disciplined column of Latin text in dark brown Gothic script, about fifteen lines, each ending at the right with a small rectangular line-filler in pink, blue, and gold with geometric patterns. Several lines begin with decorated initials: one larger initial in blue and pink with white filigree, others smaller in gold and color. Around the text, especially on the left and below, grows a delicate vine border in blue, red, and gold, with curling tendrils, spiky leaves, tiny flowers, birds perched on branches, and small tricolor pennants. On the left margin a red hybrid creature, like a monkey with a long tail, wearing or carrying something green and blue, seems to dance or blow a long instrument. At the bottom, a small man in a green tunic and red hose bends forward, reaching toward the ground, near a long-beaked bird. Above, in a later hand, appears the number “200,” and below the text a catchword in cursive. The overall light is even, emphasizing the contrast between the sober text block and the exuberant, almost playful margin.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the orderly column of text, then let your eye follow the vine that frames it into the margins. Notice how the solemn prayer and the playful marginal figures coexist without touching. The small line-fillers and initials, at the right edge of each line, are the bridge between reading and ornament.

ContextContexto

This is folio 103v of the Hours of Charles the Noble, king of Navarre (1361–1425), made in Paris around 1405 in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, attributed to the Master of the Brussels Initials and associates. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Charles probably did not commission it from scratch: he may have bought it, ready-made for the luxury market, during a trip to Paris in 1404–05, and had his coat of arms painted on no fewer than twenty folios. Six painting styles have been identified in the codex — two Italian, two French, and two Netherlandish. This page has no large miniature, only text with marginal decoration.

Curious detailDato curioso

The Florentine assistant known as “Zecho” da Firenze, responsible for most of the borders, signed his name on folio 208v — an unusual, almost modern gesture in a manuscript of this period.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause on the warm cream-toned vellum and its slightly uneven edges, with that darkening close to the binding that shows centuries of handling. I see the disciplined column of about fifteen lines in dark brown gothic script and, at the end of each line, the small pink, blue and gold rectangular fillers. The ornate initials, the delicate vine border with birds and little pennants, and the contrast between the sober text block and the playful margin tell me this is work done in ink, tempera and gold that still asks for even light and careful hands.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

What draws me in is the almost astronomical order of this page: a firm column of fifteen lines like aligned orbits, closed on the right by geometric rectangles in pink, blue and gold that look like tiny constellations. Around it, the margin is another universe, expanded and playful, with a fine vine in blue, red and gold, perched birds and tricolor pennants. That long-tailed red hybrid creature and the little man in a green tunic remind me that, in the medieval world, the solemn and the fantastical shared the same orbit.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a serious page but with funny tricks hidden in the borders. The brown text stands very straight, like lined up in a row, and at the end of each line there are little pink, blue and gold squares that shine. The big colorful letters are like doors with white swirls. And the border is full of twisty vines with pointy leaves, little birds and tiny flags. My favorite is the red long-tailed monkey-like creature that looks like it is dancing with something green and blue, and below the tiny man in green with red stockings bending near a long-beaked bird.

If you count the lines in the main column of Latin text, about how many are there?

    HintPista

Look at the dark brown block on the right: it is a tidy column and each line ends with a small colored rectangle.

  2. #2

In the left margin, what fantastic red creature with a long tail seems to be dancing?

    HintPista

Search in the blue and red vine on the left side, it carries something green and blue on its back and holds something long.

  3. #3

What three colors make up the small geometric rectangles that close each line on the right?

    HintPista

Look at the end of each line in the column: they are like little decorated fillers with a metallic shine.
