What you would seeLo que verías
An open manuscript page on cream-colored vellum, slightly wavy and darkened at the edges with age. At the far left, a narrow strip of the facing page is visible. The main block of text, on the left half, holds about sixteen lines of compact, regular Gothic script in dark brown ink. Five decorated initials in pink, blue, and gold open the paragraphs, and two horizontal bars with geometric patterns in blue, pink, and gold mark divisions within the text. From one initial, a vertical stem descends and branches across the top, down the right side, and along the bottom, becoming a border of leaves, flowers, berries, and tendrils in blue, pink, green, orange, and gold. The even, museum-photography light reveals the porous texture of the skin and tiny grains of pigment. Small birds with ochre and green plumage, orange butterflies, and hybrid creatures inhabit the margins: on the right, a being with a blue animal body, a red torso, and a green hood turns toward the text; below, a pink figure in a blue hat and green hose stirs a blue cauldron over red and orange flames. In the upper right corner, the number 224 is handwritten.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Begin with the block of text and its illuminated initials, then follow the stem that escapes from it and turns into the border. Notice how the most playful images — the birds, the butterfly, and the two hybrid creatures — live in the margins, outside the reading. The lower creature, stirring its cauldron, changes the page from a solemn text into a scene with humor at its edges.
ContextContexto
This is folio 115r of the Book of Hours of Charles the Noble, King of Navarre (1361–1425), made in Paris around 1405 in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Charles probably did not commission it from a specific workshop, but acquired it — perhaps ready-made for the luxury market — during a trip to Paris in 1404–05. He had his coat of arms painted on no fewer than twenty folios. The book was a collaborative effort: six painting styles have been identified, by two Italians, two Frenchmen, and two Netherlanders, under the direction of the Bolognese Master of the Brussels Initials. This folio is devoted mainly to text and border decoration.

Curious detailDato curioso
The principal assistant, responsible for most of the borders, was a Florentine who signed his name, "Zecho" da Firenze, on folio 208 verso — an unusual signature in a medieval manuscript, where most artists remained anonymous.

I pause on this cream-colored vellum, rippled by time, its edges darkened by centuries of hands and air. I look at the compact block of Gothic script in brown ink and imagine the scribe’s controlled hand. I notice the tiny lumps of pigment and the blue, pink and gold bars dividing the text. The vine border trailing down from the initial shows me how the gold was laid and how the porous skin still holds the color firmly.

This page feels like an orderly night sky. The text is a dense, regular constellation, and the five initials in pink, blue and gold are guide stars marking the path. The horizontal bars are horizons dividing stages of reading, like meridians. In the margin, the leafy border with gold curves like an imperfect orbit. Even the number 224 at the top feels like a coordinate helping us locate ourselves inside this portable universe.

It is so fun to look at the borders! The text in the middle is very serious and tidy, with sixteen lines, but around it there is a party. I see ochre and green little birds, orange butterflies and tiny plants with golden berries. My favorite is the blue monster with a green hood staring at the text and the other pink one with a blue hat stirring a blue cauldron over red fire. It feels like while someone prays, the little creatures are being mischievous.
