What you would seeLo que verías

A single page of an open book is shown front-on against a dark background, with the binding barely visible at left and the edge of the next leaf at right. The vellum is creamy, slightly uneven, with soft stains and wavy edges; at the upper left, the number “235” is handwritten. On the right half, a compact block of dark Latin script in Gothic lettering is ruled into regular lines. Decorated initials in blue, pink, and gold open several lines, and small blue, pink, and gold fillers close others. Along the left side of the text a tall initial stretches like a stem from top to bottom, branching into delicate vines in blue, gold, rust-red, and green, with star-like leaves, bell-shaped flowers, and tiny dots. In the margins live small creatures: two birds at the top, a blue and pink winged dragon at left, butterflies, another bird below, and at lower right a red hybrid creature with a human torso, a long tail, and a pink headdress. The light is even and quiet, revealing the matte parchment, crisp ink, and restrained gleam of the gold.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the neat block of text and then let your eye follow the tall initial down the left side. Notice how the border grows into plants, insects, and animals. The contrast between strict writing and free marginal creatures changes the page from something to read into something to explore.

ContextContexto

This is folio 115v, a text page from the Hours of Charles the Noble, King of Navarre (1361-1425), made in Paris around 1405 in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art. A book of hours was a volume for private prayer. The source states that Charles probably acquired this one in Paris in 1404-05, perhaps ready-made for the luxury market, and had his coat of arms painted on twenty folios. Six painting styles have been identified: those of two Italians, two French artists, and two Netherlanders. Its planning is attributed to the Bolognese Master of the Brussels Initials. Which specific prayer this folio contains is not stated in the source.

Curious detailDato curioso

The owner's coat of arms appears on no fewer than twenty folios of this volume, a very visible way of turning a luxury book possibly bought ready-made into a personal possession.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does the reading experience change when the margin is full of creatures that do not illustrate the text directly?¿Cómo cambia la experiencia de lectura cuando el margen está lleno de criaturas que no ilustran directamente el texto?
  2. What does the repetition of luxury details reveal about the relationship between prayer, beauty, and social status?¿Qué revela la repetición de detalles lujosos sobre la relación entre oración, belleza y posición social?
  3. If you could add a creature to this margin today, what would it be and where would you place it?Si hoy pudieras añadir una criatura a este margen, ¿cuál sería y dónde la pondrías?

The conservatorLa restauradora

If you look closely, you will see what excites me most as a conservator: the cream vitela, with its wavy edges and soft age spots, holds everything without breaking. The gothic ink is crisp and the gold shines discreetly, not loudly. Notice the handwritten number 235 at the top, and how the tall initial becomes a stem that runs down and branches into blue, golden, reddish and green vines, with star-shaped leaves and bell-shaped flowers. It is fragile and still alive.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

As a stargazer, the first thing I do is count the inhabitants of this small universe on the page. In the margins I find two birds at the top, another at the bottom, scattered butterflies and a blue and pink winged dragon on the left that seems to keep watch. At the lower right appears a red hybrid being with a human torso, long tail and pink headdress. They are not inside the compact block of Latin text, but around it, like constellations orbiting the prayer and making it feel more immense.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This page is like a garden full of hiding places! The text sits neatly in its block, but on the left a giant vine grows that is actually a super tall letter with flowers and shiny blue and gold dots. At the top there are two little birds chatting, on the left a blue dragon with pink wings that is not scary, and at the bottom a red man with a long tail and a pink hat. I like how the book looks serious because of the prayer, but the little animals are playing all around it.
