What you would seeLo que verías

A tall page of cream-colored vellum fills the frame, its surface slightly uneven, with soft shadows along the bound edge at left and a narrow glimpse of another page at right. At the upper left, handwritten numerals read “202.” The right half holds a compact column of Latin text in dark brown Gothic script, ruled by faint lines and punctuated by red touches. Three decorated initials break up the text: small blue and pink squares with white filigree, and a larger one with a red-and-blue circle on gold. From the initial at the top, a luxuriant border spills around the page: curling vines with pointed leaves in blue, crimson, green, mauve, and burnished gold, ending in tiny buds and star-like flowers. Life animates the margins: a small bird perches at the top, another appears at lower right, an orange-and-black butterfly flutters near the text, a hooded figure in pink and blue sits on a stool at left, and at bottom a hybrid creature with a green torso and red legs blows a long horn.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the block of text, then let your eye travel outward to the margins, where the decoration seems to escape the page. Return to the decorated initials: they mark the rhythm of reading. Finally, look for the small figures among the leaves; they change this prayer page from a solemn object into a miniature inhabited world.

ContextContexto

This is a page from the Book of Hours of Charles the Noble, King of Navarre (1361-1425), made in Paris around 1405 with ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Charles probably did not commission it from a specific workshop; he may have acquired it, perhaps ready-made for the luxury market, during a trip to Paris in 1404-05. The codex was a collaborative work: six painting styles have been identified, by two Italian, two French, and two Netherlandish artists. The Bolognese Master of the Brussels Initials planned and decorated the book, while his Florentine assistant Zecho painted most of the borders. On this folio, text prevails over large-scale imagery.

I pause on the cream-colored vellum, with its slightly uneven surface and those soft shadows near the spine that reveal the thickness of the codex. I look at the dark brown ink of the gothic script and the touches of red, so well preserved, and the shine of gold beneath the larger initial. The border is fragile: curling stems with blue, red, green and mauve leaves, dotted with little starry flowers. I worry about every gilded bud and every tiny creature in the margin, because tempera on vellum demands very controlled temperature and light.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this page like an orderly night sky. The column of Latin text is like a dense, regular constellation, ruled by faintly marked lines. The three initials are guiding stars: two small ones in blue and pink and a larger one with a red and blue circle on gold marking the center. The leafy border surrounding the page reminds me of an orbit with colored leaves spinning around the text. Even the little birds and the orange and black butterfly look like tiny satellites in this universe of private devotion.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This page looks like a secret garden around the letters. There are lots of pointy little leaves in blue, red, green and gold curling around all the edges with tiny flowers like stars. I love hunting for little animals: there is a birdie at the top, another one at the bottom, and an orange and black butterfly is very close to the text. On the left there is a tiny person with a pink and blue hood sitting on a little stool and at the bottom there is a funny green monster with red legs playing a super long horn like a trumpet.
