What you would seeLo que verías
An open bound volume is shown from the front, with almost the entire right-hand page visible and only a narrow strip of the previous page on the left. The support is cream-colored vellum, slightly darkened and stained at the edges, with an irregular texture and the fore-edge of many leaves visible on the right. In the upper left of the page, a compact block of Latin text in dark brown Gothic script occupies about half the surface. Several initials stand out in pink, blue, and gold, with white filigree details, alongside small rectangular bands patterned with triangles and interlace in blue, pink, and red. From the text block descends a long vertical stem in pink, blue, and gold that organizes the right and lower margins. Around it curl thin black vines with spirals, small leaves, golden dots, and multicolored flowers in red, blue, green, and orange. Among the foliage appear a small bird at the top, a blue rooster with a red comb, a brown dog-like animal wearing a green garment and rearing up, another bird at lower right, and butterflies. At bottom left, a jester-like hybrid figure with a pointed two-tone hat, pink tunic, and red animal lower body seems to dance while holding a blue cloth. At the top right corner, the number “346” is handwritten.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the block of text and its decorated initials, then follow the vertical stem on the right as if it were a plant growing across the page. Pause at each animal you encounter along the border. Finally, look at the figure in the lower margin: its playful presence changes the solemn tone of the prayer.
ContextContexto
This is folio 166 recto of the Hours of Charles the Noble, king of Navarre (1361–1425), made in Paris around 1405 with ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Charles probably acquired this book of hours, perhaps ready-made for the luxury market, during a trip to Paris in 1404–05, and had his coat of arms painted on at least twenty folios. It was a collaborative work: six painting styles have been identified, by Italian, French, and Netherlandish artists. The Bolognese Master of the Brussels Initials planned the decoration, and his Florentine assistant Zecho was mainly responsible for the borders.

I pause on the cream vellum, darkened and stained at the edges, and on the thick fore-edge of leaves visible on the right. The Latin text in dark brown gothic script sits at the upper left, but I am drawn to the Paris workshop around 1405. The initials in pink, blue and gold with white filigree and the bands with triangles support the block. The vertical stem in pink, blue and gold orders the margin and gives space to the thin black vines with little leaves, gold dots and fine tempera.

I see this folio as a miniature night sky. The cream background is the firmament and the little gold dots among the vines look like scattered stars. The handwritten number 346 at the upper right reminds me of a catalog, as if each folio were a numbered constellation. The vertical stem in pink, blue and gold works like a meridian dividing space, and around it orbit the blue rooster with a red crest, the birds, the butterflies and that brown animal in a green cloth, floating weightless.

I love hunting for hidden little animals! At the top there is a tiny bird and lower down a blue rooster with a red comb that looks like it is about to crow. There is also a little brown dog with a green outfit standing on two legs, and colorful butterflies among red, blue, green and orange flowers. At the bottom left there is a funny jester with a pointed hat and a pink tunic dancing with a blue cloth. Everything is tangled with thin black vines making spirals like springs.
¡Me encanta buscar animalitos escondidos!
