What you would seeLo que verías

An open page of cream-colored vellum, slightly aged, with darkened edges and a soft shadow along the inner fold. At upper right, handwritten, is the number "308". The center is occupied by a compact column of Latin text in dark brown Gothic script, with short, regular lines. Three decorated initials break up the text: one blue and red, another orange and blue with white filigree, and others in pink, blue and gold, accompanied by small horizontal bands in blue, pink and gold. Surrounding the writing, a delicate border of vines climbs in blue, red, green and gold spirals, with pointed leaves, small flowers and tiny strawberries or buds. At upper right a little brown-and-white bird perches; at right, a brown hare stands on its hind legs beside a small open book resting on the ground. At bottom right sits another bird with a greenish breast and brown wings. At bottom left, a figure with light hair, dressed in white and pink, reads a bright red book while seated on a long green shape reminiscent of a dragon or a leafy tail. At far right the stacked fore-edges of other pages are visible.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Begin with the block of Latin text and its decorated initials, then follow the vine growing upward from the bottom. Let your eye wander to the margins: the hare, the birds and the reader at the bottom transform a page of prayer into a small world full of movement.

ContextContexto

This page comes from the Book of Hours of Charles the Noble, King of Navarre (1361-1425), made in Paris around 1405 in ink, tempera and gold on vellum. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Charles probably acquired the volume, perhaps already made for the luxury market, during a trip to Paris in 1404-05, rather than commissioning it directly. His coat of arms appears on twenty folios. The book was a collaborative work: six painting styles by Italian, French and Netherlandish artists have been identified. Its planning and much of its decoration are attributed to the Bolognese Master of the Brussels Initials, assisted principally by the Florentine Zecho.

Curious detailDato curioso

The Florentine assistant signed his name, "Zecho" da Firenze, on folio 208 verso — an unusual, almost hidden signature within a medieval manuscript.

I look at this cream-colored vellum and see time in its darkened edges and the soft shadow near the gutter. I pause at the column of dark brown gothic script, so even, interrupted by three decorated initials in blue, red, orange, pink and gold with white filigree. I enjoy the border of vines in blue, red, green and gold with leaves and little strawberries, and I mentally care for that gold that still shines. The leaf numbered «308» reminds me that each page survived centuries of devout use.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

As an astronomer I am drawn to how this book ordered time through prayer, like a handmade celestial calendar. I picture Charles the Noble in Paris around 1405 acquiring this luxury volume made with ink, tempera and gold on vellum by a team working in six different styles. The winding vines, the two birds and the hare beside its little open book are not just decoration, they are marginalia that shows curiosity about nature, while the Latin text marks the hours of devotion like daily constellations.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This page looks like a secret garden hidden around the words! There are vines with little flowers in blue, red and green and gold swirling all around the border. At the top there is a little brown and white bird and at the bottom another one with a greenish chest. My favorite is the little brown hare standing on two legs reading its tiny book on the ground. And at the bottom left a person with light hair in white and pink reads a bright red book while sitting on something green that looks like a friendly dragon.
