The image shows a single vellum page from an open bound manuscript, photographed straight on with the edge of the facing page visible at far right and a dark background at the top. The right half is occupied by a compact block of Latin text in dark brown Gothic script, arranged in short lines that leave an irregular, lively right edge. Four historiated-style initials punctuate the text in blue, pink, red, and gold, each with white tracery and small geometric fillers extending into the line endings in pink, blue, and gold patterns. A thin vertical border stem in blue, pink, and gold runs down the left side of the text and branches into scrolling ivy vines that fill the top, left, and bottom margins. The vines carry small three-lobed leaves in gold, red, green, and blue, tiny buds, butterflies, and birds with grey, orange, and green plumage perched at the lower corners. In the left margin a slender dragon with a pink body, curled tail, open mouth, and large blue wings stands upright among the tendrils. At lower right a red hybrid creature with long legs, a flowing blue and green drapery, and a curving tail walks beneath the text. At upper left the number “308” is handwritten on the creamy, slightly uneven parchment.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the block of script and follow the painted initials down the page, then let your eye travel outward to the borders. Notice how the vine stems organize the entire sheet and how the fantastic creatures turn a devotional text into a lively margin to explore.
ContextContexto
This is folio 193v from the Hours of Charles the Noble, king of Navarre (1361–1425), made in Paris around 1405 in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Charles probably did not commission it from a single workshop; he may have acquired it, perhaps ready-made for the luxury market, during a trip to Paris in 1404–05, and had his coat of arms painted on no fewer than twenty folios. Six painting styles have been identified in the codex, by Italian, French, and Netherlandish artists. The exact devotional passage on this page is not identified in the source.

Curious detailDato curioso
One of the artists left his name in the book: the Florentine assistant known as “Zecho” da Firenze signed folio 208 verso, an unusual trace of an individual hand in a collaboratively made manuscript.

I pause on the creamy, slightly irregular vellum where you can see the number 308 at the top left. Notice the compact block of dark brown gothic script and how four initials in blue, pink, red and gold structure the text with their white tracery. The gold on the geometric line fillers and on the trilobed ivy leaves still shimmers after six hundred years. That vertical stem in blue, pink and gold running down the left side and turning into ivy borders speaks of ink, tempera and gold leaf applied in Paris around 1405.

This page is not just text, it is a marginal sky. The stem framing the text block branches like a constellation of tendrils with golden, red, green and blue leaves. Among them appear tiny butterflies and birds with grey, orange and green plumage perched in the corners. Above, the dark background of the binding makes the vellum seem lit from within. It reminds me that around 1405, looking at a book of hours was also like observing a portable universe, full of creatures accompanying nightly devotion.

Look at all the little animals hidden around the letters! On the left margin there is a pink dragon with huge blue wings and a coiled tail that looks like it wants to climb up the stem. At the bottom right walks a red creature with long legs and a floating blue and green cloak. If you follow the ivy vine you will find little birds and butterflies among the colorful leaves. The big colorful initials with gold are like doors to enter the very tightly packed text.
