A vellum page with a warm, creamy parchment tone and softly cockled edges, photographed straight on, holds a dense block of Gothic Latin text in deep black ink at the center, framed on the top, left and bottom by an intricate ivy border. The border is built from a thin, dark vine with spiky holly-like leaves in muted blue-grey and green, gilded tendrils and tiny barrel-shaped buds striped in red, blue and gold. At the upper right a small bird with a pale breast and dark wings perches among the leaves; at the lower edge another small bird with yellowish belly stands near a long-tailed green dragon with a scaly back, open jaws and a little bell hanging from its neck. On the left margin a hybrid grotesque leaps: its lower body is a bright blue goat-like beast, its upper body a human in a red tunic and green hood, holding a bell aloft. The text features decorated initials — Q, S, N, C, E — in blue, pink and burnished gold with infill patterns, and small rectangular line-fillers with geometric gold and pink-blue decoration. Light is even, revealing the porous parchment texture, faint staining, and a handwritten number 415 at the top left.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Begin with the central text block and its colorful initials to sense the balance between reading and ornament. Then trace the winding ivy vine as a path that links the leaping hybrid on the left to the dragon below. Linger on the tiny striped barrels and the birds: those miniature touches turn a decorative frame into a lively, inhabited margin.

ContextContexto

This is folio 203v from the Hours of Charles the Noble, King of Navarre (1361-1425), dated about 1405 and made in Paris, France, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art, in ink, tempera and gold on vellum. Rather than a direct commission, the king, who was French-born, probably acquired the ready-made luxury manuscript during a trip to Paris in 1404-05 and had his coat of arms painted on about twenty folios. The book is a collaborative work showing six distinct painting styles by Italian, French and Netherlandish artists. The main planner and painter of seventeen large miniatures was the Bolognese Master of the Brussels Initials, assisted principally on the borders by a Florentine who signed himself Zecho da Firenze on folio 208v.

Curious detailDato curioso

Even though this folio shows only text and border, the same volume unites work by six different painters, with seventeen large miniatures by the Master of the Brussels Initials and most borders by Zecho da Firenze, whose signature on folio 208v is an unusually explicit artist's mark for a medieval book of hours.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause on the yellowish vellum, slightly wavy with faint stains that show its age and porous texture. The block of gothic text in black ink is very stable, but what I look at most is the border: a thin vine with ivy leaves in grayish blue and green, golden tendrils and little barrels striped in red, blue and gold. The gold leaf on the initials Q, S, N, C, E and on the geometric terminals is still luminous and tells us about the tempera and gold on vellum applied around 1405 in Paris.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

At first glance this is not a sky, but I think about how the world was ordered in 1405. The Latin text is the firm center, like an axis, and around it the foliate border grows like a constellation of blue and green ivy with golden glints. The little striped barrels, the two small birds perched among leaves and the green dragon with a little bell remind me of old maps full of creatures in the margins. The blue hybrid with red doublet and green hood holding a bell looks like a playful guardian of that tiny universe.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a very old cream-colored page with tiny packed black letters and big pretty letters in blue, pink and gold. Around it there is a little vine climbing up the sides with blue and green leaves and golden things that look like striped candies. At the top there is a little bird and at the bottom another little bird next to a green dragon with a long tail that has a little bell. In the middle there is a blue monster with red clothes and a green hat jumping with another bell, it is so funny!
