This is folio 252 recto of the Book of Hours of Charles the Noble, King of Navarre (1361-1425), made in Paris around 1405 in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Charles probably acquired the already luxurious manuscript during a trip to Paris in 1404-05, rather than commissioning it directly. He valued it enough to have his coat of arms painted on no fewer than twenty folios. The book was a collaborative production involving six painting styles—Italian, French, and Netherlandish—led by the Bolognese Master of the Brussels Initials.

This page just will not stay still! In the margins there is a hidden garden with swirly stems, leaves and tiny flowers. Up top butterflies fly and on the right there is a bird, a pink bunny standing on two legs and a little brown doggy. Down below there are more little birds. And in the corner there is a tiny fellow with a pointy blue hat and pink belly playing a trumpet. It looks like the book wanted to play while someone was praying!
