What you would seeLo que verías

An open bound volume is seen slightly from the side, with the thickness of many vellum leaves visible at right and a sliver of the facing page at left. The cream, slightly aged page is filled with Latin text in black ink with rubrics in red, arranged in two blocks around a large gilded initial. Inside a circular miniature with a red and green frame, on a gold ground, Saint John the Baptist sits barefoot on green grass, wearing a loose blue robe. He has fair, wavy hair, one bare leg crossed over the other, and beside him stands a small white lamb. Around the text runs an exuberant border: a thin stem branches across the top, right, and bottom margins into curling tendrils with small leaves and flowers in blue, red, orange, and gold. Perched among them are brown and pinkish birds, butterflies, and dragonflies. In the upper right, a hybrid creature with a human torso in blue, pink animal legs, and a tail carries a basket with a green plant on its head. At the bottom, a green monster with a long red beak walks left. In the upper right corner is the number 537.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the roundel of Saint John, almost hidden among the letters, and then follow the stem that frames the text toward the margins. Notice how the decoration overflows the block of writing: the longer you look, the more birds, insects, and hybrid creatures appear. Finally, compare the saint's stillness with the movement of the animals around him.

ContextContexto

This is folio 260v, with Saint John the Baptist, from the Hours of Charles the Noble, King of Navarre (1361-1425), made in Paris around 1405 in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Charles probably acquired this book of hours — perhaps made ready-made for the luxury market — during a trip to Paris in 1404-05, and had his coat of arms painted on twenty folios. Six painting styles by Italian, French, and Netherlandish artists have been identified in the codex. The Bolognese Master of the Brussels Initials planned the decoration, and his Florentine assistant signed himself "Zecho" da Firenze.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual detail: in the lower margin, a green quadruped with a very long red beak seems unrelated to the saint, a whimsical marginal invention typical of luxury manuscripts, where sacred devotion and play coexist on the same page.

I focus on the materiality of this creamy, aged vellum page, with its thickness visible on the right. I see the black ink of the Latin text and the red rubrics organizing the reading around the large gilded initial. I am fascinated by how the gold leaf in the miniature’s background still shines after six centuries, and how the blue of Saint John’s tunic keeps its intensity. I notice the border with fine tendrils, flowers and birds, and I think about the tempera work on vellum and how delicate it is to preserve these pigments and gildings.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

What captivates me most is that golden circle framing Saint John the Baptist seated on green grass with his little white lamb. That gold reminds me of an inverted night sky, a light that does not come from the sun but from devotion. I imagine the medieval reader opening the book and finding that golden moon amid the text in two blocks. Around it, the border is like a constellation of curling tendrils, little blue and red flowers, birds, butterflies and dragonflies orbiting that small, gilded universe.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

I love all the little creatures hidden in here! Saint John is sitting barefoot with one leg crossed and his white lamb beside him, but I look more at the borders. At the top there is a blue man with pink legs carrying a basket with a little plant on his head, so funny! At the bottom a green monster with a long red beak is walking. There are brown and pink birds, butterflies, colorful flowers and curly little leaves everywhere. It is like a garden full of surprises where every little branch has something fun to find.
