This folio comes from the Book of Hours of Charles III the Noble, King of Navarre, a French-born ruler, made in Paris around 1405 in ink, tempera and gold on vellum. According to Cleveland Museum of Art data, the precious volume was highly prized by its owner, who had his coat of arms painted on no fewer than twenty folios. Rather than a direct commission, it was probably acquired ready-made for the luxury market during a trip to Paris in 1404-1405. It is a collaborative work showing six painting styles by Italian, French and Netherlandish hands. The artist who planned and decorated the book and painted seventeen large miniatures was a Bolognese painter known as the Master of the Brussels Initials, assisted chiefly by the Florentine Zecho da Firenze, who signed folio 208v.
