What you would seeLo que verías

A single page of aged vellum fills almost the entire frame, its cream surface slightly darkened, wavy and stained at the edges. At right, the curve of the bound volume and a sliver of the next folio are visible. In the center-right sits a dense block of handwritten Latin text in dark brown-black Gothic script, ruled with very faint lines. Red ink breaks up the reading in short phrases, and three decorated initials organize the page: a small blue and pink S with gold at the top, a large T painted like a wooden cross with pink and blue forms behind it, and a smaller initial near the bottom. Around the text grows an exuberant border of thin, branching stems in blue, red and green, covered with ivy-like leaves, tiny flowers, gold dots and miniature red, green and white shields. At the upper left, a hybrid creature with a human torso in a blue tunic blows a long horn; he has a curly tail and one bare leg visible. At the bottom, a red fox walks upright like a pilgrim, wearing a green cloak and carrying a staff and a rosary. The light is even, with no harsh shadows, and reveals the matte grain of the vellum and the slight sheen of the gold.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the two decorated initials and the red lines, which mark the rhythm of reading, then move outward to the border. Look for the small creatures at the top left and bottom: their humor changes a solemn page of prayer into a living, playful object.

ContextContexto

This is folio 316v of the Hours of Charles the Noble, King of Navarre (1361-1425), made in Paris around 1405 in ink, tempera and gold on vellum. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Charles probably acquired this book of hours, perhaps ready-made for the luxury market, during a trip to Paris in 1404-05, and had his coat of arms painted on no fewer than twenty folios. It was a collaborative work: six painting styles have been identified, by Italian, French and Netherlandish artists. Overall planning and decoration are attributed to the Bolognese Master of the Brussels Initials, assisted chiefly by the Florentine "Zecho" da Firenze.

If you look closely you will see the vellum is not smooth or white, it is creamy, rippled and stained dark at the edges after six hundred years. At the center right the Gothic Latin text in brown black ink is broken by touches of red and three decorated initials, a small S in blue and pink with gold, a large T like a wooden cross and a smaller one. The border growing around it spreads with thin stems in blue, red and green, ivy leaves, small flowers and golden dots that shine under even light.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

This folio is like an ordered sky, the text is a dense constellation at the center right and the initials are stars guiding the way, the small blue and pink S with gold at the top, the large T shaped as a cross in the middle and another below. Around it the border is a vegetal milky way with blue, red and green stems, leaves, small flowers and gold dots like tiny stars, and small shields in colors. Even the marginal creatures look like travelers, one at the upper left blowing a long horn and a pilgrim fox below.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

Look how fun this is! Around the serious letters there is a vine full of blue, red and green little branches with leaves and shiny golden dots. At the top left there is a weird creature with a blue tunic, a curly tail and a bare leg playing a very long horn. And at the bottom a red fox walks on two legs like a person, with a green cloak, a staff and a rosary. In the middle there are big colorful letters, a tiny blue S with pink and gold and a huge T that looks made of wood.
