This page comes from the Hours of Charles the Noble, King of Navarre (1361-1425), a book of hours made around 1405 in Paris, according to Cleveland Museum of Art data. Although owned by the Navarrese king, who had his coat of arms painted on twenty folios, he likely acquired it ready-made on the luxury market during a trip to Paris in 1404-05. It was a collaborative work showing six painting styles by Italian, French and Netherlandish artists. The Master of the Brussels Initials, from Bologna, planned the decoration and painted seventeen large miniatures, assisted chiefly by Zecho da Firenze for the borders. The medium is ink, tempera and gold on vellum.

When I look at this page I see the work on the vellum, that yellowish parchment with wavy edges and stains that speaks of six hundred years of history. The tempera and gold leaf keep their matte brilliance over the deep blue and intense red of the ivy border. I pause at the initial S with the red dragon inside and how the gold catches the even light. It is remarkable how the black gothic ink and the pigments still hold their intensity without cracking.
