What you would seeLo que verías

A single vellum page, yellowed and slightly mottled, photographed straight on, with a dense block of Latin text in black Gothic script on the right and a lavish foliate border framing it on three sides. The script is even and tightly spaced, interrupted at the bottom by three illuminated initials — a pink and blue B with gold, a blue and rose E with interior tracery, and a similar F — each extended into a small horizontal bar patterned in blue, red, gold and green lozenges. The border is a delicate vine of thin gold and dark-blue tendrils bearing tiny ivy leaves in gold, green and russet, plus striped buds and blossoms in red, green and blue. In the upper right corner perches a small pink bird; in the lower left, a brown one. Two marginal grotesques stand out: at upper left, a hybrid with a plumed blue headdress, open beak and green avian legs, perched on pink foliage; at lower right, a tumbler in a red cap, pink and blue doublet, green hose and red shoes, bent over in a contorted pose. The parchment background is creamy with faint age spots and soft shadows at the gutter, while even museum lighting catches the burnished gold of initials and vine tips. The overall palette is warm parchment contrasted with saturated medieval pigments.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the compact text block and its three gold initials, then trace the vine that forms a T-shaped frame around it. Linger on the two marginal grotesques — the crested bird-man and the tumbling figure — and notice how they turn a prayer page into a playful, inventive space.

ContextContexto

This folio comes from the Hours of Charles III the Noble, King of Navarre (1361-1425), now in the Cleveland Museum of Art. Rather than a direct commission, the king probably acquired the finished luxury manuscript while in Paris around 1404-1405, as shown by his coat of arms on some twenty folios. It is a collaborative work showing six distinct painting styles — two Italian, two French and two Netherlandish. The overall design and seventeen large miniatures are attributed to the Bolognese Master of the Brussels Initials, active in Paris, with border work largely by his Florentine assistant Zecho da Firenze, who signed on folio 208v. The medium is ink, tempera and gold on vellum, typical of the International Gothic period.

Curious detailDato curioso

Books of hours were private prayer books for lay owners, and their margins often feature drôleries — witty or fantastical marginal scenes — like the tumbler and bird-human hybrid seen here, which were considered compatible with sacred text in the Middle Ages.

This folio makes me think about hands and materials. I see yellowed, porous vellum with irregular edges, worked with ink, tempera and gold leaf that still shines under the case light. The initials B, E and F combine pink, blue and gold with delicate filigree, and the ivy border unfolds with dark blue and golden stems, leaves and buds. With a magnifier I can follow the fine stroke of the Master of the Brussels Initials and his collaborator Zebo da Firenze, six hands in total in this Parisian book from around 1404.

I look at this page as if it were a night sky. The block of text is compact and dark, like the firmament, and the border is a constellation of golden tendrils, leaves and small flowers surrounding it on three sides. I pause on tiny details that are like stars: the pink bird at the top, the brown one at the bottom, the hybrid with a blue crest and green legs. Everything glitters with gold leaf, like points of light on pale vellum, and it reminds me that in 1404 people also read time by watching tiny lights.

This page is like a garden with a surprise! In the middle there are neat little black letters and at the bottom three giant colorful letters with shiny gold. Around them everything is vines with golden, green and reddish leaves and striped little flowers. Up top lives a pink bird and down below a little brown one. My favorites are the funny border characters: on the left a man with a bird body and a blue crest, and on the right an acrobat with a red hat doing a bendy pose. Did you see him?
